strange Heater problem
« on: 11 October 2005, 14:14 »
Right here goes!
My Mk2 Golf GTi Heater doesn't blow warm air when the engine is up to temperature, just cold. However when you start the engine from cold, within a minute or two, warm/hot air comes from the heater, but only until the engine warms to running temp whereby it goes cold again!
Any suggestions would be much appreciated as its getting colder and damper in my motor!!

that will be the valves in the heater pipes buggerd as that's how they go warm air till the engine gets hot

I'm 99% sure it's vw part no V191 819 911 A £26+vat
although I have read on here that vw cannot supply these my local dealer had them in stock

Right, i've has a look in the Haynes manual, but it doesn't show whrereabouts the heater valves are located. Could you narrow down where i'm to look?!!   :undecided:

follow the coolant hose thats attached to the plastic flange on the RHS of the block, the pipe goes into the passenger compartment.

Job done,

Phoned my local VW and they wanted £33 all in for the valves but couldn't tell me when they would recieve it form Germany, as that part is difficult to get hold of. However went to my local scrappy and picked one up for a fiver - more like it!!
The heater now works a treat! Needed it today too cos of the bloody weather.

Thanks lads - this site is great!

P.s there are a few other niggles to iron out so i'll be back on here soon enough!

It may just be an airlock mate.

Remove the coolant header tank and run the car from cold until the coolant starts to boil, then stop engine immediately.
You should see bubbles coming up through the tank.
Massage the coolant all the hoses while you do this, especially two about 1 inch diameter, top right of the engine bay, these are the ones that pass to the heater matrix.
Also, rev the car a little to get the coolant pumping around.
Then wait for car to cool, top up coolant if needed, then replace cap.

... it's turned into a fashion show for poofters.
