was also under the impression that hot engines (specifically turbos) don’t like being turned off when hot repeatedly. Maybe a myth, not sure...

Yes of course, VW would fit something which would dramatically increase the chances of warranty claims for broken turbos, because that's such a cheap and easy thing to fix that its perfectly offsetting the environmental benefit...

A warranty is only 3 years long.

Being as every newish car I’ve been in over the last four or five years has had stop start and most have been turbo cars I think the cooling of turbos has been engineered well enough now for it to not reflect reliability.
If anything it’s the batteries that get the hardest time. I have had to have one replaced myself in my GTI PP.

The turbos don’t need warming up or down like in the early days and last a lot longer.

I’m of the opinion that Stop Start is great in manual cars and probably a headache in DSG equipped models.
I think we are stuck with it whatever for a few years until combustion engines slip away into the history books.

The worst thing fitted to modern cars imho.
Why do we consumers put up with it?
It should be an option that you can choose or not.
It's just unnatural for me for a car to be constantly shutting down and starting up again and must place unnecessary stress on parts of the car.

But you can choose; you have the option of switching it off. It’s become part of my starting procedure to switch off stop start when I start my engine. I usually only re-activate stop start if I know I’m going to be sitting in stationary traffic for any length of time.

With DSG, letting go of the brake causes the car to restart again after a stop.

Not on my 7.5 PP dsg it doesn't, it's only when you touch the throttle or the car in front moves. That's one of the things I like about it compared to earlier versions - you don't have to dazzle the drivers behind with your brake lights on.

Throttle blip rather than brake release is probably tied in with the function of the autohold - Polo has old school handbrake which I only put on when parking the car up. The Polo always wants to creep forward when not restrained by the brakes, which is fine with me, but firing itself back up because the car in front has shuffled forward and I have not triggered the restart is by far my biggest annoyance.

I coded it out straight away.

If you could disclose the coding pathways via VCDS or OBD11, i'd be most grateful!
