  • Yes, it does catch. On everything.
Hi all, When I turn on my heater nothing at all happens, no air flow, no heat no nothing.

Then, if I leave it on setting 3 and then have to stop suddenly the heater starts working again, but only for a second or two.

Also, if I go up a really steep hill it will occasionally work for a few seconds then go off.

That's the first fault, the second is that there is no airflow from the vents whatsoever., previously this hasn't been a problem as it still worked from the screen and the foot vents.

Any random idea's you have would be good because I ain't got a clue.

Thanks Mark.

The bushes in the heater motor are probably worn. The motor is located under passenger shelf and its easier to replace the whole unit. It just twists and drops out.

You can sometime get away with it by wacking it one.

You said that it works on the 3rd setting but I doubt the resistor has blown. Sounds like the bushes

Heater motors pack up because rain water drips on them from the engine side. Check the scuttle covers for cracks etc

Dude, I have got some serious rain problems!

After a good downpour it's not unusual to have water about 1.5" deep in the passenger side footwell - front and rear!

I like your advice - wack it. If that fails I'll be down the scrappy getting a 'new' one.

Thanks a lot mate

Mark

Cure your rainwater problems before you replace it or the new one will drown too

Open the bonnet and check the rain tray isn't cracked as said, if it is go to VW they sell a better designed one made out of thicker plastic that wont crack.  Then take it out along with the small one on the left side and look in both corners of the scuttle area, make sure the drain holes are clear of leaves/dead mice etc otherwise water will back up and leak in everywhere.

Check for missing/loose grommets, on the passenger side whack a ton of grease round the base of the fresh air intake grill, or remove & replace the seal.  On the driver side do the same for the bonnet release grommet, or you'll get water in ya fusebox.

Other causes of water leakeage are the sunroof drains being blocked, the drainpipes exit in the front & rear arches.  Open the roof and pour a little water in to make sure it drains quickly.  Next have all the door cards off and check the plastic seals behind the door cards, if there are any splits rip em off & replace with some decent plastic sheeting and tape down with waterproof duck tape.  I always cut an extra sheet to half the hight and stick it to the bottom half of the door frame, and tuck it in at the bottom, this stops any water running down the seal and pooling at the bottom.

Thanks a lot 'Blue Mk2' and 'RubJonny' - Some really good, sound advice.

I will firstly wack the heater and see if that does the trick.

The new tray will be ordered by the weekend for sure. Mine has all manner of cracks and leaks on it. In fact, the left half is completely missing and therefore full of squirrels and illegal immigrants.

Thanks again

Mark

It is also misting up now making it a real hazard to drive as it doesn't clear - drove 30 miles home 2night in the rain with windows down!!!

I dont know the part number but some on this forum should have the part lying about

You could be missing the rain cover too that sits under the bonnet near the washer jets. This lets sh!t loads of water in if missing

It may be as it almost completely covers the fresh air intake, which is located in the scuttle area on the passenger side.  Not sure of the part numbers, but there are 2 covers the long one on the passenger side and a smaller one that goes over the ECU.  I'll double check the codes at lunch if I have time :)

The price is roughly £30 if memory serves, you could try http://www.gpcvwaudi.com as they do genuine VW parts at lower prices.  The price list is years out of date so make sure you call em up!

Edit: Blue the cover under the bonnet grills wasn't even fitted to lower MK2s, only the GTIs got em :)
