Joe GTi and myself had one of the first GTis in the country. I got mime end of July 2013 and had no teething problems. Only problem I have had was the thermostat housing a few months ago. Hasn’t missed a beat other than that in almost 5 years and 60,000km. I will be ordering a Mk8 when the order books open in Ireland

If you can believe what they write:

https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/2019-volkswagen-golf-mk8-first-pictures-mule-show-new-cabin-tech

That actually says 3 door will remain...

Also says MK8 GTI will be a mild hybrid with a 48V system.

I am fairly sure all of the Mk8 range will have hybrid tech or varying degrees. Its just the way everyone is going.

I wouldn't want to own one of the first next generation GTi, VW often have a few teething issues with their cars, I would be happy to let a few brave soles buy theirs first to see how they get on. Maybe buy one after a couple of years when VW have sorted any possible niggles???

@clubsport, totally agree with you on this. I’d have no desire to be an early adopter of a new model and effectively be an unpaid product tester for VW!

Aside from any potential teething issues, waiting a couple of years should (hopefully) mean that if there are lengthy wait times for the first customers, these will have reduced to something more acceptable two years after launch. And it’s likely you’ll be able to get a better deal two years into a car’s lifecycle than you will if you order one of the first.

A bit of a mixed bag whether to be an early adopter or not.
I didn't have any problems with a very early mk6 and an early mk7.
Specs have been improved after the first 12 months or so on the mk6 and mk7.
The mk5 and mk4 however had downgraded spec after a year or two!

It's nice to have one of the first ones of a new model especially if you've had the previous generation for several years and bored of it, but the waiting times are a pain in the derriere and there's always the risk of teething problems or spec improvements early in the model cycle.
Swings and roundabouts but better to wait a while on balance.

It was pretty much confirmed by VW insiders during a marketing customer focus exercise recently that the performance models at least will have hybrid technology.
It'll force the costs up but gets around ever spiralling power outputs and the need for ultra clean emissions.

Makes me laugh these well researched and accurate articles... last Golf cabrio 2014/15 mk6

Three-door stays but no cabrio

VW plans three bodystyles: three-door hatchback, five-door hatchback and estate. There are no plans to develop a successor to today’s cabriolet model.

I have no wish to replace mine anytime soon.

It was on the first delivery to the U.K late June 13 (according to the dealer).
Picked up July 10.

Perfect car, a few cosmetic issues with the rusty hubs and diamond cut Austins.
I had a bluefin for a while and noticed some clutch slip but has been fine since I removed it.
New pads on the front and pads/discs on the rear last month. That’s all.
Poor wiper blades replaced with Bosch Aerotwins and horrible, horrible Bridgestones replaced with Contis, then PS4s.

I can honestly say that I am dreading the day I have to get rid.

I ordered my car June 2013, collected it in October.

Still cannot figure out what to replace it with...coming on for 5 years, a record for my ownership history!

I will wait until the Mk8 is actually announced before committing to a replacement now (other performance hatches just don’t appeal) but this may turn out to be my “fun car for life”. My daily driver is a 2015 Citroen C4 Cactus 110 and is being replaced shortly by an electric car which will certainly be less fun to drive than my GTi.

Waiting for the next model/version is a great way to save money. Use it for phones, cars, laptops, TVs... the list is endless!

If you play the game well, then you only end up getting a new thing when the new thing is really a big step up from what you already have.

My advice would be to wait till you see something you really think would be a step up and go for it. (Or alternatively be forced into the decision because the thing you already have has stopped being great).

(Obviously this does not apply to spouses. You have to stick with them long after they have stopped working and long after there are better models available )
