Whose waiting for a Mk8 GTi?
« on: 25 May 2018, 23:10 »
My privately owned Mk7 GTi PP will be 4 years old in Sept, it's done less than 30,000 miles and now would be the time I normally change cars.  However changing to a Mk7.5 (and parting with £10-15k+) doesn't seem to make much logic.  I'd get 10hp more, 7 speed DSG and improved ICE/connectivity.  The recently announced TCR doesn't seem to move the dial much either.  I don't need an R.

So is anyone else waiting for a Mk8 and when do you think a decent GTi will be offered - will they be out in time for Sept 19 change of plate?

I think it’ll be 2020 too tbh.

The performance cars are always a bit behind the vanilla models. It was a good 6-8 months after the MK7 was launched (late 2012) until the GTI landed in showrooms (mid 2013). So if the standard MK8 appears late next year (and maybe it’ll be later?), I think the GTI will be at least 4-6 months later...

If going by what happened the last time is any indication what to expect:
10 November 2012 the Golf was presented/first available at dealers in Germany.
In the UK it became available only in the Spring 2013.
In Geneva in March 2013 GTI was unveiled and became available later that year.

So if Golf Mk8 is available in the autumn 2019 in Germany, I would not expect it sooner than summer 2020 in the UK market...

Yeah, I ordered one in April 13 and took delivery in July.
If I recall correctly, UK lead times were crazy. Some guys waiting 6+ months from ordering to delivery.

Also bear in mind that once the order books open for the GTI, you also need to factor in the waiting time from when the car is ordered to taking delivery of the car. This could be influenced by factors such as;
increased customer interest and customer demand in the new model
VW may limit the number of build slots allocated to dealers to make the GTI ‘more exclusive’ in the early months of its life
the spec of the car ordered by the customer; historically, certain options seem to have impacted build timescales; e.g. reversing camera, certain designs of alloys)
When the mk7 Golf GTI was launched, some owners experienced a long wait for their cars after ordering - 8 months wasn’t unusual, with some waiting longer. The long wait scenario is also currently being repeated for customers who’ve ordered the new Polo GTI and GTI+ models; anyone ordering one now is being quoted 40+ weeks waiting time, so expected delivery around March 19 plate change).

So, if the mk8 Golf GTI order books open say, 6 months after the mk8 Golf launch (end 2019/beginning 2020), if there’s a similar 8 month wait, it could be late summer/early autumn 2020 before the first customers actually take delivery of a mk8 Golf GTI.

2002  mk4 Golf GTI (the 150 bhp diesel version); Deep Black Pearl

Thanks for the comments.  Having seen how long it's taking to see new Polos on the road and reading the comments about the slow ramp up in the model range for Mk7 Golfs back in 2012/3 then estimates around being on the road in mid 2020 seem reasonable.  Need to get that spreadsheet out again and consider some new scenarios - second hand Clubsport Edition 40 perhaps?

also, I've got a feeling that they won't be offering a 3 door version of the new Golf.

so if you're anything like me who only likes 3 doors, then I would get a 7.5.

Personally I'd buy a TCR :)

& add to that, the shape of it might not be as nice as the 7.5, personally I dont think the new Polo is a nicer shape, I think they got it just right with the 7..

I hope that’s not true. My next car won’t be a Golf if I can’t get a 3 door.
