Clutch and damper issues MK7 GTI
« on: 09 May 2018, 21:07 »
I'm taking the plunge and about to buy a 2016 GTI performance pack with 15,000 miles on the clock.
I have seen a few posts of various sites about clutches going at low mileage and rattles from the rear dampers.
What are people's experience of this, is it really a common issue or just an unlucky few?
Thanks in advance

You'll probably only have clutch issues if it's been remapped or had a tuning box on which you may not know about until you've actually bought it.

I have a 2018 manual 230 GTI owned from new with 2500 miles on the clock and im taking it back to the dealers in a few weeks to have the clutch looked at. The clutch pedal feels terrible with vibration and a grating sensation whenever you press the pedal down. I have also been getting clutch stink whenever i go for a more spirited drive so personally i think the clutch in the manual GTI is terrible

Maybe im just unlucky.

Oh and the windscreen is made of paper too, ive already had this replaced after a grain of sand hit the windscreen.

You'll most likely be fine. As mcmaddy says, the most likely issue will have been if it has been mapped which you are unlikely to know but I think it's a pretty good bet that the vast majority won't have been. Ultimately in buying a second hand car there are all sorts of potential hazards, most will still be under warranty unlike the clutch but I think you'll be very unlucky to have any problems. Mine is on 24k now with no issues. As for the noisy dampers, iirc that was a problem with DCC equipped cars but on this forum there hasn't been much if any mention in the last couple of years so perhaps it only affected earlier models, either way I wouldn't worry too much. Just get it, drive it and enjoy it!

And don't forget to post a few pictures
