screen washer fan-jets non-return valve
« on: 02 May 2018, 12:48 »
Judging by the 1 or 2 second delay before water appears on the screen, I suspect there is either no non-return valve or it is faulty. The car is two months old. Is this an inherent problem? Or what is the quickest route to fixing it, please?

I'm sorry if this has been covered before but I can't find similar thread.

What exactly do you think is wrong?

Most cars (I think) squirt as soon as you press the button, or pull the lever. Mine takes a second or so. Is it possibly a feature of fan jets, of which I have no previous experience?

If you've got the winter pack which you probably do and the temperature is low enough the jets will be warming the water. Could it be that? I must say I've never noticed a delay but saying that I've had fan jets on my cars since 2000.

Yes, it has the winter pack - I think. Are you saying it has to heat up a small quantity of water before releasing it? I'm not sure how it works.

It doesn't have a NRV.
Fully fush or pull the stalk and rather quickly so.... this then will make sure the wipers won't come on straight away but with a 2 second delay, by which time you'll have washer fluid on the screen.

Huh, never knew that - must give that a try later.

Another question from me if I may (rather than start a new thread), is there a proper way to adjust the fan jets. On my wife's Polo Blue GT, it looks like one of them (the passenger side) is spraying too high as most of the water ends up on the roof.

Perhaps a NRV would not allow escape due to expansion of the fluid when it is heated.

Does the Polo have jets or fan type like the Golf.
Jet type ones you can adjust with a needle in the nozzle.

I assumed it does not have NRV for cost reasons, positive side effect it accounts for heat expansion - and equally it allows for cold expansion too and prevents pipes from splitting when they freeze.
