MK7 Golf GTI used prices in UK
« on: 08 April 2018, 18:19 »
Hi All,
I always been a VW fan (currently drive a MK6 Golf GT TDI) and am looking at my next purchase of 5 door MK7 Golf GTi. This will be the only family car, doing the school run etc (2 kids under 5)

I have a max budget of £15k this will get me a 2013/2014 model. My question is were do we see the value of these in the next few years? The new GTI comes out in 2019, thinking shall I wait till then and then buy a used one? I probably have £5.5k equity in the MK6 as of now. I generally keep my cars 3-4 years, so do we think the GTI will still be worth 10k in 2022?

The only other car I am considering is a BMW 3 series F30/F31 320i/328i seem to be priced well at moment.

I have driven neither plan a test drive of both in the next 2 weeks.

Any help on used prices or experience of Bmw would be most helpful.
Thanks
Jay

I've seen them at 12-13k so I can't see it holding its value by 2022

If you spent £15k on a 2013/14 GTI now, I think it's unlikely it'd still be worth £10k in 4 years time.

The longer you wait the cheaper they get. But if you want one you have to do it at some point so why worry? Just do it and enjoy

Well you are right in that the Mk7 will take a dive when the Mk8 is available to buy.

Its probably going to be late 2019/2020 though.

On the other hand, I think if you bought now, the depreciation will have got to the point whereby its not significantly impacted by such things... ie a 1 year old Mk7 when the Mk8 arrives will take a big hit, but not a 6 year old one to any real degree because a Golf GTI basically has a bottom end price which it will almost be at I'd guess by then - the sorta 5k mark.

Because I'm a geek I did a graph of used GTI prices when I was buying mine:

Very roughly depreciation in the first 5-6 years seems to be about £2k/year and then ease back to about £1.5k per year.  Mk5's seem to have bottomed out at between £5k-£7k for good ones and are starting to rise in price again with all the recent articles about them being a bargain.

The Mk7 was so well reviewed, and so far the engine seems solid, so it seems like another classic in the making to me.. but.. and it's a big but, in three years time the electric revolution will be in full swing and battery ranges will probably be 500 miles plus by then. That's only going to do bad things to the used prices for cars with an IC engine in my opinion.  Add on the arrival of self-drive cars in 3-5 years time and that will probably further deplete the demand for used cars from this era.

I weighed all that up and still bought a 2015 GTI and couldn't be more pleased with my decision ;D   It does make leasing a tempting option at the moment though.

Mk5s gtis can be bought for 2000 these days I can't see anyone paying upto 7k for a mk5 unless it's a low mileage edition 30 or r32 our mk5 r32 with some nice extras is for sale at 5k as that's all it's worth

3.5k to ~7k for a 2007 GTI (not a special one) depending on mileage seems to be the case.

Not bad for a ten year old car really!

As was said though, the next few years will see all dinosaur burners drop off in price rapidly, but the real crunch will be the ten years running up to 2040 when no more dinosaur burners to be sold.

I'd say most of us have at least 2 or more GTI's to come, unless VW get nervous...

Golf Mk8 will come on sale in 2019 in the autumn in Germany, so it won't be in the UK until Spring 2020 (if the introduction of Mk7 is anything to go by).
GTI Mk8 thus will not be on sale in the UK sooner than 2021...
