From what I read electric mk8 Golf is going to be a real alternative to petrol and will make diesel redundant . Suggested range will be 250 miles plus  so for most that will be a charge a week .

That might be useful... the range certainly would be... but pure electric needs:

a) a fast charging system - sub 30 mins
b) A large network of publicly accessible charging points

And point A is easier to achieve than point B.

Until someone standardises the charging system and government deploys the charging network, it will still be a toy for short range jollies.

Besides which, its not even going to impact the actual main polluters!

Real change is expensive.

All good points there and all taken on board. Perhaps there is no Golf that will spark any enthusiasm for me anymore. I might go and see what Volvo have to offer.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

they can't even get fast internet to ppl, so i wouldn't think they'll be sorting a charging network anytime soon :(

You'd only regret that.

I ended up feeling the same about Golfs, around 30 years of them on and off made me very blasé about it all and I ended up selling my R before I spent any more money on a car I no longer used.
Big mistake!

I tried a GTD too (only because of the massive discounts available on the last of line mk7's). A good car in its own right and very quick with a DTUK box, but just lacked something.

Then I got a Clubsport 'just for the hell of it' and I haven't looked back.
I still miss my R for the fantastic all rounder that it was but there is still one Golf that sparks a bit of enthusiasm in me.
If the Clubsport is the last Golf I ever own I'll be happy with that. I've spent my whole adult life with a Golf of some sort never far away from me and became very non plussed about it all. The Clubsport put that spark back.

I think if you want something fun you've got to look away from family hatchbacks and into something less practical... GT86 would be my first port of call or if you have some serious dollar, wait for the new Supra. Maybe that Fiat sportscar might be worth a punt too.

Unfortunately my Golf is a do it all workhorse. I need practical first and as much fun as I can get second and lastly not breaking the bank in purchase or running costs. I think thats why the performance Golfs always have won so heavily, because they are 90% of all of those things.

I looked hard at GTE (and other similar cars such as A3 E-Tron, BMW i3 and Hyundai Ioniq) but rejected them all as compromised in terms of weight and complexity. I think the future for this type of car is limited and will be a difficult sell in coming years.

I have ordered an electric car, but it replaces my other car and I will be keeping the GTi as I don’t believe the electric charging infrastructure will be useful for many years...if ever.

I did look very briefly at the GTE prior to ordering my GTD, but decided the 20 mile electric range was utterly pointless for my commute. Shame, as there were some quite tempting lease deals around before they temporarily closed the order books.

Thinking back though, reckon a 1.5TSi Evo in R Line trim would have been a better bet than the GTE for my commute if it weren't for the stingy standard equipment.

It's the car my wife uses mostly, so needs to be practical for lugging kids about. I think I'm just bored with Golfs having had one in one form or another, if you count a Mk1 Leon Cupra, since 1999.

I considered a GTE and a GTD before settling on my GTI. I thought with my short commute and regular recharging I could travel almost entirely electric but having worked out the costs (not necessarily accurately) I didn't think it would actually work out all that cheap. Added to that the likely poor economy of dragging all the dead weight on a long drive of which we do many being at home holidaymakers, I dismissed it as being arse biscuits and only good for those business users who could cash in on the tax benefits. Next the GTD, I was sold on the economy and the extremely low ved but my short commute didn't seem to fit well with the dpf. So glad I went for the GTI, absolutely spot-on for me

I detest our 1.6TDI Match with a passion. It's just so dull, I won't drive it. My wife is happy enough with it, but in an 'it'll do' kind of way. I get my pleasure from my Amarok and on rare occasions my Mk2 GTI, but wondered if I'd get enthused a little more about a sportier Golf. I like the look of the GTE and am not too fussed about outright performance and handling dymanics, so if might fit the bill as something a little different. Or would it just be another small car that's just like every other?

Any thoughts anyone?

Totally academic as VW are not currently taking orders for the GTE. The order book closed in December with waiting time at least 9 months! It is not even on the Configurator.
