Engine oil top up (Mk 7.5 GTI 230 manual)
« on: 03 April 2018, 13:47 »
If you were to need to top up the engine oil level in your new Mk 7.5 GTI 230 and the two options on the shelf were 1) Castrol Edge III 5W 30 or 2) shiny new Mobil 1 0w 20 which would you go for?

Is it not 5w30 or 5w40 that are the recommended oils? I've never seen anyone use 0w20.

Yes - many thanks for the link SRG - I had been there - but it seems to say 'it depends'.  It says the new 0w 20 oil 'can only be used for specified engines' and then........doesn't specify which engines! It does say its for 'the new power units launched in 2016 and 2017' - so does that include the Mk 7.5 GTI 230..?

I'm none the wiser!

Have you tried your owners manual??

And if it’s not in the manual, suggest you speak to your dealer.

Poor communication on VW’s part not to state which the ‘specific engines’ are that can use the 0w-20 oil, although it does state in the item at the link I posted earlier;‘LongLife IV is not backwards compatible and should only be used in the engines for which it is recommended – Please check your vehicle handbook or contact or local Retailer for assistance’.

This suggests it should be in your owners manual.

The oil standard VW 508.00 / 509.00 describes new smooth-running oils with specification SAE 0W-20. These oils are not backwards compatible, so they must not be used in older, unapproved engines! This oil can be used only in 2018 model year GTI, GTI PP petrol engines, but not “R” engines!
Some model year 2017 cars had partly false information in the manual (saying that it is compatible), so VW started to mark engines that cannot tolerate this oil since then with an appropriate sticker in the engine compartment.
In case of doubt, ask the dealer/workshop!
VW 504.00 / 507.00 is safe in any case for 2017 & 2018 model year cars.

From VW’s website;

http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/recommended-oil

From that page: "If you wait till the warning light shows to top your oil, it's often too late"

Maybe they should make the oil light come on earlier so it isn't too late?

It doesn't say which oil light. If it's the orange oil light then that is the oil level warning so should give plenty of opportunity to top up. If it's red, then yes, it's probably now dead! Lol!

The amount of people I go out to that have though the red light means it needs topping up is crazy! They just keep driving until it seizes despite it making horrid noises beforehand!

When I purchased my  MK7 Gti P/P there was a complimentary bottle of Mobil 1 oil in the side pouch in the boot. Just had the first (lubrication) service carried out, and left in the boot, in addition to the Mobil 1 oil was a bottle of Castrol Edge in a 'presentation' leather? case. So which one, if necessary, do you use? I assume, although I haven't checked, they both meet VW's spec. But I don't like mixing brands.
