Is it not supposed to clip in? I wouldn't be using anything like silicone on it.

If you need to use silicone then something is broken and needs replacing. If not broken, on the reverse you'll see 4 clips arranged within a circle which match the inside of the mirror housing. Just line them up and push, they'll all click into place. It shouldn't come out so either it wasn't fitted correctly or it has been knocked.

Okay, looks like about £15ish to replace so worth a go. Silicone certainly holds on well so worth a go, I'd just give it plenty of time to go off.

Otherwise try Weetabix, that sets like concrete and is near impossible to remove when dried

Is the glass heated, or the backplate? If the backplate is heated, silcone will insulate and reduce the effectivness of the mirror heating. Thin double sided tape would be a better job, just make sure you warm it up to make it tacky.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

I had the same issue on a 2008 Passat; the mirror glass came unstuck from the rest of the part.
Sellotaped it together while waiting on a new one - was less than £30 I think, and included heater element.
No tools required to replace the mirror/heater/backing-plate unit - takes about 2 minutes to do.
