how does it know a new battery is fitted or identify different serial numbers? 12.v on one batter is 12.6v on another battery surely?

Ah right, so if I just disconnected the battery leads for a few minutes, when reconnecting will everything work or will I be left with multiple errors / warning lights ?

you tell it by either changing the battery type (I think because they have different charging characteristics) or the serial number (so it knows your putting a new one in that won’t need as much charging as a older one)

Also on changing the serial number say it has 1111111 in the BCM you just need to change one digit, say 1111112, sand not put in the actual serial number

In answer to Sootchuckers' original question, I've disconnected mine previously to fit my tuning box (for about half an hour) and upon reconnecting, there were multiple warnings come up on the dashboard. However these cleared by themselves within minutes of starting the car up.

It might be worth a VCDS/OBDEleven scan to see what's been stored afterwards but definitely no long term issues.

As above, you will get a multitude of warning lights, but a short drive and the car will re-learn everything it thought it had forgotten.

You don’t need to remove the battery cables to remove the felt liner. It is tucked into itself at the rear (bulkhead end) I took mine off my MK7 R  ready to put onto my new MK7.5 as I had read that the new cars didn’t have the full liner. My brother picked up his MK7.5 GTi and it had the full liner so put mine back onto the R only to then find out when my new one arrived that it didn’t have the full liner only the sides  :evil:
Miffed at the time but not bothered now as it doesn’t look look that bad !
