Be preapred for a big dissapointment in performance / response below 3500 rpm espically coming from an ST.......A good car but the engine / throttle is fast asleep lower down the range.

Absolutely correct.
There's a hell of a lot of torque at very low revs and a very responsive turbo on the GTI but it's all dumbed down by the accelerator pedal electronics.
With the steering in Sport and a pedal box fitted the GTI becomes something very responsive and lithe.
