engine auto stop puzzlement

I have only had the 7.5pp gti for a week, but I'd appreciate any wisdom that can be offered regarding the auto stop algorithm. So far as I understand if the engine is warm, the battery is charged and the auto stop setting is on THEN it should stop when you pull up at traffic lights.

Mine sometimes stops but sometimes doesn't and sometimes it stops and then immediately restarts.

I think I have noticed the engine restart when the radar detects the car in front has moved off.

Sometimes I have to turn off the auto stop function using the button on the left of the dsg lever and then turn it on again and the engine will then stop. But why do I have to do this?

When stop-start is working you will notice a letter 'A' inside a circle come on your dashboard. When there is something preventing the engine from automatically stopping the letter A will have a line through it. Examples of things that may prevent it from stopping are cold engine, low battery, high load on electrics, e.g. heated seats, climate control, heated screen on full blast etc, or in the case of diesel engines DPF regens in mid-cycle.

If your engine has auto stopped it will kick in again if the car in front moves away. This is part of the front assist system. I find it quite annoying that it kicks in even if the car in front is only creeping forward rather than moving off. Haven't found a way to override this yet without either fully switching off front assist or stop-start completely. Not sure if there is a way

Also if you press the brake too light as you come to a stop it may not stop the engine. A firmer press is more likely to make the engine to stop taking into account the info written above.

Also if you wiggle the steering wheel, even only a little it restarts.
I'm sure someone looked at me today as it I had stalled it!

Most usual is that the climate control is currently heating or cooling the car. It won't auto stop until the aircon is doing neither and will kick back in if the aircon starts up due to an interior temperature change.

I wouldn't worry about it, like so many other Golf systems, it does its own thing and just let it get on with it.

I get a small pop up message at the top of the centre console if the engine doesn’t cut out. If you press on it, it tells you why it didn’t cut out.

For me, it usually say it’s due to a danger of the windscreen becoming fogged.

I turned it off this morning because it was failing to turn the engine off when i wanted it to or restarting the engine unnecessarily after it had stopped it. By then turning the auto stop on, it would actually stop the engine.

Thanks for telling me you can get a diagnosis of why it did not turn the engine off by pressing the icon.

It can be permanently disabled via VCDS. I never use it, oil draining out of turbo and engine all too often in stop/start traffic is recipe for expensive long term component failure.

It’s not permanently disabled in my car, but I’ve got into the habit of switching it off at the start of each journey.

I disabled mine with the OBDEleven gizmo because my wife told me to. She prefers it that way.
