steering and brakes without engine running
« on: 08 February 2018, 18:36 »
I am poring over the instruction manual, waiting to pick up a new 7.5pp on 1st March, vanity day.

I gather that under certain eco settings the engine will actually turn off while the car is coasting and the dsg disengages. I understand that the steering on these cars is electric and so doesn't need hydraulic power from the engine, but what about the brakes? Are they not servo assisted and therefore need vacuum from the manifold? If not, how do they work please?

My 7.5 PP has coasting enables but it’s never yet turned off the engine.

The manual says

"Coasting with dual clutch gearbox DSG
In coasting mode, the momentum of the vehicle can be used to save fuel in conjunction with a
foresighted driving style. The coasting with dynamic start-stop function means the engine is not
just disengaged, but is also switched off. The engine no longer brakes the vehicle meaning that
the vehicle can coast over a longer distance. The function is only available in selector lever
position D and at speeds of approximately 40 – 130 km/h (25 mph – 80 mph)."

Didn’t think you used brakes whilst coasting otherwise it would be braking

"Didn’t think you used brakes whilst coasting otherwise it would be braking" Yes I see the logic. But what if you were coasting and you suddenly needed to brake?

I suspect the engine will cut straight back in when you touch the brakes. Not sure if anyone has got it working though? The mk7 only reverted to tickover, it didn’t cut out the engine entirely.

In nearly 7k miles in my Mk7.5 I've never encountered the engine switching off whilst coasting other than about 2 seconds before you come to stop.

The dynamic stop start does kick in and restart though when the car in front moves which can be annoying if they creep forward at the traffic lights. Sure you can switch this off somewhere.

I have used coasting a few time coming down the A55  dual carriageway you can coast for about 2 Miles if it’s  a quiet time of day or night , Rev counter drops to tick over and you can actually build up speed as soon as you touch the brake or accelerate the engine just picks up to right revs  no jerking no noise ,
It really is amazing

Yes, but the OP says the engine should actually stop... I don’t think it does.

Could it be something that works differently in Europe and is not permitted in the UK??
