Grrrrr for the first time in a very long time, kerbed an alloy on the way to work this morning (front nearside on my 2014 GTD 5dr).

Was an evasive manoeuvre into low kerb at around 15 mph - took a sharp chunk out of the rim plus an abrasion to the Michelin PS4 (font pair are only approx 1,500 miles old).

My question is - have I wrecked the tyre?  I drove on (carefully) to work another 10 miles or so and no air loss warnings etc form the car/steering feels straight and ok.  The ripped flap of rubber on the PS4 is approx. 7mm wide, near to the rim, not deep, but ugly.

Does anyone have similar experience?  Is sidewall damage like that repairable?  Terminal?  Or potentially not an issue?

Get an expert to take a look.... sidewall damage can be dangerous (causing blowouts), but only if its serious enough.

You should be okay as long as there's no reinforcing cords showing or damaged.

I've run tyres with chunks out of them and no cords showing with no issues - always worth getting an expert opinion though as the last thing you need is the tyre shredding when at speed.

It's impossible to say without seeing the damage.
Personally if I had any doubts I would change the tyre.
£100-110 on a PS4 is relatively cheap for the peace of mind and potential safety concern.

Literally did the same at the weekend. Some van decided to pull out of a junction after clearly seeing me as they initially stopped but then thought they'd move forward some more. I had to swerve and kerbed it.

I've already ordered a new tyre to replace this. Need to find somewhere to repair the alloy however.

As previous the presence of cords would be the main concern. If no cords are visible and the sidewall hasn't blebbed it is legal although unsightly.

No tyre fitter working to BS AU159 standards will touch the sidewall of a tyre.It is classed as a no go zone in tyre repair.
Personally i would leave it.It depends on how much spare cash you have.You could always get a brand new cheapo for £50. :sad: The fact that it's not deep is a good sign.
Drop into your nearest fast fit tyre fitters and they will tell you it definitely needs replacing 'could cause a blow out at any time'.Maybe it will,maybe it won't.They will want to sell you a PS4 at top dollar (non internet price) so watch out for that little trick.Get the cheapest( fitted) internet price for the tyre you want before you go near any of these places.Just to stick it to them!. :grin:
