Bad mpg,black gunge from exhaust

my 1999 2.0 gti is sick! the computer is telling me that i'm averageing 16mpg, there is a  strange petrol/cataylist smell wwhen idling or just as it is switched off and there is black bits with water coming from the exhaust. i suspected and blown head gasket as they was some gunk in the filler cap, but my local garage says the head gasket was ok and sent me on my way. could anyone shed any light on this? the smoke isnt blue so the rings must be ok, its not using a dramatic amount of oil or any water so can anyone pleae help as i am thinking of getting rid as it is wrecking my canister!!!!

same as my 1999 2.0l... its overfueling....run some red-ex in the fuel, you mite need two treatment but it works a treat! stops the bad smell,soot and smoke from the exhaust and mpg improved alot, as ive been told my fuel pressure reg is fooked and the lamada sensor is fooked too which is the cause of the problem.

You can get red-ex from halfrauds for 99p for one treatment, the first one i used, i used a little stronger than recommended i.e one little bottle to half a tank of fuel instead of a full tank, then when i needed more fuel, bought another bottle of red-ex and added that to a full tank of fuel.

Give it a try and let us know what happens 

p.s make sure you pick up the petrol injector redex, should be in a white bottle with green writing.

as useful as redex is for freeing up injectors.. the guidlines are there for a reason. Any kind of oil in your fuel lowers it's octane rating considerably.. push it too far and you get detonation

By all means try redex, but follow the instructions

ive not had any "side effects" from putting it in a little stronger on one occassion tho, trust me it was bad, i needed it lol.

ta lads will get some tommorrow, iv'e already changed the maf sensor and im not sure weither it needs a coil pack

well check this out, my car has "fixed itself" i was talking to my wife in the car about selling it and the next day after the home tune man came out, the mpg has improved to a better state than it was when i bought it. can some genius explain that? maybe the computer had a fault which the nice man reset for me

mine does that, its running fine at the moment, but every so often the black smoke appears and its off to halfrauds for some redex

Hey guys im new to the forum and just brought myself a 2000 2.0 GTI and i have very similar problems, a bit of black smoke if i give it a good rev and the smell is also there when idling...

Just had the MAF and Temp sensor changed a couple of days ago.

Did the Redex sort it out??? Dont wanna spend any more money on it but its eatin WAY too much petrol 15-18 MPG while driving really sensibly!!

yes the red ex helps loads but it is only temporally.. mine lasts for just over a month then the soot and smell come back.. iam hoping my mates, sisters, friend who works at vw can get me a new fuel pressure regulator on the cheap lol

did the fuel pressure regulator fault show up on the VAG COM??
