Golf GTD 66 plate - Low Coolant
« on: 08 November 2017, 16:58 »
hi All,
popped bonnet earlier to top up my screenwash, and noticed that my coolant reservoir was way below the MIN mark
Still had some purple fluid left in there, and no signs of any leaks in engine bay

Just a little concerned, car is 66 plate, has done just over 10k since almost a year ago.
Spoke to VW, they didn't seem too concerned and simply told me to just top it up.

Anyone else had similar issues on the GTD?

There was a general Mk7 issue with coolant filling at the factory (GTD/GTI/R). Airlocks meant that the coolant level could (and did) suddenly drop at some point.

Maybe yours dropped but not below the min threshold triggering a warning.

Mine dropped about a month and ~4000 miles into its life.

Filled it up, problem never came back.

As above, it's a known issue, with trapped air not expelled at the factory, leaching out over time and appearing as a coolant drop even though it's not.  Top it up and it should be ok.  However if it drops after topping up then it may need investigation as there have been issues with leaks/water pumps etc but usually there are tell tale signs - such as smell and visible evidence.

Likewise on my 65 plate. If i'd known at the time, i'd have dropped into VW and got them to top it up free of charge.
