Steering wheel leather issue - warranty?
« on: 08 November 2017, 15:18 »
Hi folks, looking for a little input please

Steering wheel leather has started to sort of peel and ripple up from underneath:

Had the car for a few months now, 66 plate. Did notice a little texture to the steering wheel when I got it but it wasn't this bad. Is getting worse.

Thoughts?

Get it replaced under warranty!  Mine looks nothing like that after 60k and 4 years.

Unless you are using rough gloves or have sandpaper hands it is a defect.

I have the same age car as you. It should still be looking new. I'd say get it fixed under warranty.

Mine didn’t look like that on my first mk7 after 123k miles!
Not wearing rings, bracelets that could cause it? (Not to be misunderstood but in case this contributes).

Hi folks,

To answer your questions about rings etc. No I'm unmarried and don't wear rings for decoration.

The rippling is in the corner of the wheel at the bottom, not a high use area. It's effectively pulling itself up and rippling... Obviously not external damage.

I'll contact my VW dealer and have it looked at. Will keep you updated!

Don’t take any cr@p from the dealer, drag them round other GTIs or other leather steering wheeled cars they have. Put it all in writing on dated letter, labelled complaint giving them 14 days to resolve the issue. The law has changed in 2015, the Consumer Rights Act is better and supposidily easier to get them to deal with these issues, even if out of warranty or they claim it’s wear and tear and not covered by warranty. Your contract is with the dealer, not VW. If in doubt, most house insurance includes free legal advice for these types of issues if you are unable to resolve.

It looks like it is rubbing off your leg as your getting out of the car.

Leg rubbing or jacket catching perhaps our even fingernails catching. This happened on my new GTi and I just warmed a cloth up and the mark disappeared. Wasn't as bad as OP though.

^ Looks exactly like that to me. Had this happen in my mk6 and put it down to unknowingly rubbing it on exit. I raised the steering and it never happened again.

It isn't that. Those wrinkles in the photo are elsewhere on the steering wheel, although not as bad. I can't be rubbing myself all over it can I?
