I agree on that. The sweeping is definitely cool but other than that the rest of the light design is too ordinary. By going with just 2 continuous straight lines along the width instead of some more bespoke pattern like in the MK7, in the night it could be a Passat, a Leon, a BMW or a Merc. On the contrary I like how you can tell a MK7 GTI/R from a distance.

I must be in a minority of not liking sweeping indicators at all, either the Mk7 OBDeleven/vcds tweak or the facelift indicators. I think they look naff. 

Agree about the new light design being too generic now, nothing to set it apart from a big standard golf really and even less so with an R.    Also prefer the Mk7 rear lights to the facelift rears. VW, Audi, Seat all look the same now.
