Xenons vs LED headlights
« on: 01 November 2017, 13:38 »
Just curious really as I'm not in a position to change my current GTD at present.

I was just wondering if the lucky owners of the new MK7.5 GTD's, GTI's and R's that owned the pre-facelifted models can comment on the brightness / spread quality vs the Xenon's of the previous model ?

I know the LED units look really cool and probably do some funky things the "old" Xenon's didn't, but without all the fancy frills, what's the light output light from modern LED units vs the stock Xenon's (having never driven a car with LED headlights)?

I was following a new Audi with LED headlights last night. It was quite noticeable how much whiter and crisper the light cast onto the road and surrounding areas was compared to the xenons on my Amarok.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

I had a 14 plate Mk7 GTD with Xeonons and now have a 17 plate GTD 7.5 with LED's.

My opinion is that the LEDs are brighter (or maybe just whiter) and project further.

Definitely better, but not like twice as good, a bit better.

Cornering lights are also white LED, unlike the yellow filament ones of the Mk7.

Can't compare to previous Golf model but certainly the std LEDs are much better and brighter than the wife's Mazda 3 xenons and brighter than my previous Merc C Class LEDs.

There didn't appear to be much difference between the Xenons on my Mk6 Golf and our 2014 Audi A3. Though I thought the static cornering lights on the A3 were an improvement.

After I arrived home tonight SWMBO said we were going shopping. Driving the A3, I really noticed the difference in the colour of the lights. The LEDs are much whiter. The white road marking, verges and hedges appear a lot better lit with LED lights.

With the A3 Xenons - other car lights seemed a lot more dazzling. I found myself squinting a lot more to see the road a head.

... though that may have been because of all the dcikheads with their fecking fog lights on
