unleaded or four star
« on: 25 October 2003, 22:05 »
I bought my MK2 8 valve 1.8 GTI in 1998 it is a 1985 model - B reg at the time it had the original engine and the person I bought it from said I had to use four star, since then I have changed the engine over for a 1989 engine which I thought was an identical engine but I have recently discovered that it has hydraulic tapets. I have up to now been using unleaded with a lead substitute, I've just thought - I ought to be able to use straight unleaded on a 1989 engine - Can anyone tell me if this is correct and if so would I need to change the timming.

Thanks

If it is a 1989 engine then it should be a digifant, so normal unleaded is fine. On the early k-jet engines it was necessary to use 98 Ron like optimax as these engines are not fitted with knock sensors, its not the lead thats needed (unlike old ford engines), its the high octane.
