Mrk 4 Temperature Sensor- How much to replace?
« on: 04 October 2005, 15:15 »
I have recently been having problems starting my Mark 4 Golf GTI 1.8 20v. It's ok first thing in the morning but if I go somewhere for 10 mins and then try to restart it just wont fire. I have to wait 10-20 mins before re trying. I've read through the forum and I think it's going to  be the temperature sensor. How much I am looking to replace it?

Just replaced mine on same engine (1.8 20V non-turbo), Shouldn't cost more than £20 for the part (got mine trade for just over a tenner) and it's pretty easy to do yourself, it's literally 5 minutes of a job. If you're not sure how, it would probably be cheaper to buy a Haynes manual to find out how to do it than pay someone.

just had my coolant temp sensor replaced (cost 24.99 for the part), my uncle fitted it at his garage, i don't have the part codes but guess it must be quite common fault and easy to recognise as he spotted it almost straight away and had the right part delivered to his garage within the hour, should be easy to sort out even at a non dealership site mate

Anyone have a rough idea of where this sensor goes?

on 1.6 SOHC engine codes AEH and AKL all 1.8 and 2.0 petrol engines the sensor is clipped to the top of the hose connector, bolted to the left-handed end of the cylinder head.

Ive just changed one on my 1.8t, really easy, just make sure you get the correct one, euro parts told me their were several versions, they require the colour of it & how many pins, i.e. blue & 4 pins like mine
They cost around £25 from the dealer or for around £10 from others
Its only clipped in with a circlip type affair into a water hose, on the right hand side of the engine looking from the front.
You may need to get a new o ring to be on the safe side, about £1 from VW
I just unplugged the wiring loom & checked the guage didn't work to find which one it was
