MK 7.5 Discover Navigation - text messages

Got a surprise this weekend, after having my new 7.5 GTD for 3 months ....

Driving along, listening to the Test Match, when a voice comes over the speakers saying that I have a text message, and asking if I would like to hear it. Never realised I had this facility ... so I asked to hear it, and was then asked if I'd like to send a reply, which I did (by voice). This reply was duly sent..... Voice recognition was perfect.

So, there seems to be a way to hear incoming texts and reply to them by voice, but I cannot find a way to actually send a new text, just by voice. Seems strange that you can reply to an incoming text by voice, but not send a new one??

Any thoughts ??... and I just have the standard Discover Navigation system ....

You don't use a Windows phone do you? I was hearing and dictating replies years ago on the old RNS units.

This is my thinking too - Windows phone makes use of Cortana which effectively places an invisible call to the car to read out the message - it doesn't make use of any voice recognition that the car may have.

If you want to start a new message you can create a new contact called Cortana which you can then call from the head unit or steering wheel controls and speak to like you would any other digital assistant.

Thing is though is that I was doing it before Cortana was a thing. I left Windows before Cortana.

Is there a way to turn on the message notification? All I get is a little envelope icon at the top of the screen and I have to press phone, then the Inbox button to read. I use an iPhone 6s BTW.

If you have android auto running it does this stuff easily... Probably Apple carplay too
