Retrofit 2016MY head unit
« on: 09 June 2017, 08:48 »
A friend has just installed a Kenwood head unit in his car which has Android Auto capabilities which I would be interested in having in my 2013 GTI.

Now I understand that this functionality was only part of head units from 2016 onwards and I've found a chap on ebay selling one for a very reasonable price.

My question is does anyone know the part number for these newer units so I can cross reference it?

Any other tips for putting another car's head unit in mine?  I understand some coding might be required.

Any advice gratefully received!

Genuine VW unit?
Tricky retrofit, not just because of coding but there is CP etc.

Reasonably priced ebay unit, has this been 'recovered' from a parked car perhaps? ;) At least that is the question I would be asking myself. VW won't remove CP from units reported stolen.

Yeah well I can't be sure on the origins but it is an OEM unit from 2016, could have been an honest upgrade - I'll ask more questions!

Thanks, looks like Nav chat specifically in that link.  I'm not really bothered by Nav, is appconnect only available on Discover Pro head units?

Further reading seems to indicate that it's the globe box part that is the brain and I'll need that bit, my head unit would be OK as it is.  Either way the protection thing and the lack of USB in the cubby is going to be my biggest issue.

I don't think you can just swap the "brain". Yes the "head unit" is just a display and input device, but suspect that the drivers might be different - basically the "brain" is a small computer running a flavour of Unix.

Like any Unix system, it will need specific drivers for screens and input devices. These are unlikely to be found on the "brain", which will be loaded with what you need for its normal pairing.

And that's before you start dealing with any VW attempts to prevent theft/upgrades...

I'd definitely say that trying this using components you buy from Ebay is unlikely to work and will cost you a fortune.

The other thread suggests companies that might have the ability to do an OEM upgrade, I'd punt for that if you really wanted to do it, apart from anything else, you can get your money back if they screw it up!
