Esure have been cheapest for me for the last couple of years. They came up lowest on a couple of the comparison sites, so I went to them direct and it was slightly cheaper than going through the comparison site. If I remember correctly I think I also got about £40 cashback by going via Quidco link.
Just check the small print as they use non genuine parts to keep costs down in any claim

Im insured through Esure and I had a bump last Christmas and the approved body shop used all genuine parts. :cool:
I worked at one of there body shops and that was never the case

Different parts of the country get different prices from the same insurer so it's a bit pointless asking for recommendations. More Than are by far the cheapest for me up here in the North East and no one else gets anywhere near. Guarantee someone in the Midlands or down south will get a different price.

Agree mcmaddy. Insurers are using so many risk factors these days to calculate their prices; two identical people (gender, job, marital status) living in the same street with identical cars, driving the same annual mileage and with the same claims history can get be quoted different prices by the same insurer, because of the multitude of other factors used by the insurer to calculate the premium.

Also, IMO considering an insurance recommendation based solely on price is only one factor. What value do you place on good customer service. More importantly what is the insurer's claims service like? - if you are unfortunate enough to need to make a claim, that's when you want your insurer and their overall product offering to be good.  Cheapest won't necessarily be the best.

Just done a quote for my ordered GTI PP 7.5, comes in at £233 on Liverpool Victoria without courtesy car and legal cover £270 with. I am 38, never claimed apart from windscreens, no convictions, points etc.

Current car, Fiesta ST 3 is £220 without the extra cover, £260m with. All quotes are protected NCB.

As already mentioned prices vary city to city and postcode to postcode and even within the same postcode  so looking for recommended insurance providers on here is basically useless albeit recommended ones are mentioned.
Easiest way is comparison sites I personally use Confused which I use yearly once my renewal arrives even  your existing provider normally offer better rates through these sites which is ammunition when you contact them.
We personally pay just shy of £460 for both my Gti and the wife's Scirocco so it equates  £230 each and that's Admiral multicar..

I've just done a quick confused.com search and an R or a GTi PP would only cost me just an extra £38.94 over the GTD :shocked:

... one advantage of getting older :embarrassed:

Here is a link to the Parkers website insurance groups - http://www.parkers.co.uk/volkswagen/golf/hatchback-2013/insurance-groups/

It would appear that the facelift GTD has moved from 26-27, the GTI has moved up from 32-33. However the facelift Golf R has moved from 34-39.

The GTD's performance did not increase at all. So why the rise? Does that mean the GTI rise is not performance related?

The old GTD/GTI/R values were 26-32-34. :huh: Surely that does not reflect the difference in performance :undecided:

The new groups are 27-33-39.

Change of insurance grouping could be down to a number of factors. There are many factors in addition to a car's performance that are used by Thatcham's (vehicle) Group Rating Panel - see the summary article at the link below;
