Replacement engine start button
« on: 28 May 2017, 14:10 »
My engine start button has now peeled in two places pricking my finger both times, surprising how much blood can come out!! Car is out of warranty and I wondered if anyone knew how much they are to replace and if it's an easy job. Googling just seems to bring American sites up.

Hi Dave  This has been covered before and it appears that at some point VW redesigned it. Judging by the cost others reported, it would be worth your while pushing for a warranty replacement as something that has to be touched everytime you drive the car should last! Thanks Peter, only trouble is car is only under extended warranty, I mentioned it last time it was in when it peeled in only one place and was told it wouldn't be covered

I'd push harder as it's not acceptable nor is it fair wear and tear. It's a part you have to touch every time you use the car and therefore you have a reasonable expectation for it to last a few years. Especially since it has assaulted you! I'm sure once the rain kicks in more people will come online and give you better advice including how to complain effectively

It depends on your relationship with your dealer, they might swap the button free of charge. They have redesigned the start button a few years ago as the initial design had a flaw where the N letters where peeling.

I had this issue with my old 2014 GTI and after 2 years the button has been replaced under warranty although my dealer said that it is a "goodwill gesture" as it is considered wear and tear. The replacement button was the redesigned model where the N letter had the sharp edges joined to avoid peeling. The new GTI 2016 came with the new designed button so no issues so far.

A few people ended up with a bloodied finger on account of the previous design as described above. Maybe if you were to 'hurt' yourself it might go some way to 'persuade' the dealership to replace at no cost. Sometimes you have to suffer to get what should rightly be yours, lol.
