Are cars taking 3-4 months typically ? When I get to order time I'm looking at the GTi pp, 5 dr, pro nav, dynaudio and maybe a grey ( need to decide which looks nicer ) so assume none of these are in short supply ?
VW’s order and build system means that cars are built to order, so although your choice of spec might be a popular one, and VW may produce a number of GTI’s to that spec, there won’t be a stock of readily available cars to your spec for VW to supply you with one.
It’s more about how many scheduled build slots your dealer has.
If he has a slot that s still changeable then you can get that slot in just a few weeks.
As well as the number of build slots available to the dealer, VW operate a ‘just in time’ parts supply system - they don’t hold stocks of component parts for a car’s build as this isn’t cost-effective. Components are ordered from VW’s parts / component manufacturers and suppliers when a vehicle order is received and accepted by the factory. A specific car’s build won’t start until all the parts are available to build the car to the customer’s required spec, so a major factor in the timescales for building a car is the effectiveness of the supply chain of parts feeding into the build process. If manufacturer of specific component parts have problems building and supplying these to VW, then that could impact build timescales of cars that require those parts.
