Composition upgrade

Hi

Golf mk7 gti MY2013 has standard composition media system w/o nav. I would like to get a nav system but don't want to lose the functionality from the MID and steering wheel controls not to mention the main controls in the touch screen itself.

I have been looking at Pioneer AVIC-F80DAB

But am not sure what I would lose and what I would retain in terms of controls

This should plug into your existing composition media unit, and will offer Nav functionality without the loss of OEM appearance

Anyone had any experience of using this system, is it any good? I quite like the idea of using Android auto

My local vw dealer charges 600 to install

Have a search on here about the kenwood garmin unit (which vw main dealers sell)... I believe the majority opinion is that it's somewhat sub optimal in every way.... Including having crap traffic data reception.

Vw said to get the aerial booster for the tmc cost extra 30 quid

I also saw  in the vw accessories brochure....

Is this compatible? Work in the MFD

I don't think I've ever seen that one in the VW brochure before. That's a February 2017 document.

From the picture, the map display is the same as VW's factory nav unit. Weird how the unit is physically white though?

Whether it works with the MFD is a question hard to answer though.

Despite what that brochure says, I can't find that option in the VW Accessories page for the Mk7 Golf...

Oh and BTW, the booster for TMC on the Kenwood isn't a paid for option AFAIk... you couldn't even buy it, Kenwood sent it if you complained...

Pioneer also make a similar product to the Kenwood unit, that uses different maps if you have reservations about Garmin. Wonder if that has anything to do with what's in the VW accessories brochure?

What I've never understood is why VW offer these third party upgrades? Surely just simply fitting the actual OEM optional parts would be better for all concerned??

As I understand it, the main hurdle is component protection which needs VW factory authorisation codes before the unit will talk to the car. Historically they have refused to provide it when people have wanted to upgrade from nav to navpro...
