A couple of years ago, when I had a GTI, the roads and forums were full of GTDs and R's.

Nobody it seemed bought GTI's anymore (ok, quite a few on here did but in general they were few and far between).

I was driving back to the West Country from the airport at the weekend and all I saw were mk7 GTIs everywhere. There seems to have been an explosion of GTIs. I even saw a ClubSport yesterday. So there you have it, 99% of the time during the working week all you'll see is reps and commuters in their company GTDs and middle managers and leasers in their Rs.
GTIs must be bought almost exclusively by private buyers that head for the coast on bank holiday weekends.

I still rarely see another, a few GTDs, the odd R but hardly ever a GTI. Not that bothered though, so long as they keep stamping them out

As for getting away on a Bank Holiday weekend, chance'd be a fine thing, I'm always bloody working

Over the course of this and the next generation I would imagine the popularity of the GTD will decline, and we'll see fewer of them.

I'm not fully convinced about the GTE either, I think it's the eGolf where the models future lies. Over time, I would expect this technology to be rolled out across the range, including the GTi, rather than simply being a standalone version.

I'm still seeing a lot of GTDs, but never new ones, so I reckon there is a change happening. A few things driving this, I think:

1. Dieselgate and the exposure of the NOx problem. A general loss of confidence in diesel.

2. The GTD has lost the cutting edge of the VW performance diesel. It's too refined!

3. The GTI has developed very reasonable fuel consumption while not losing decent performance over a power band nearly as wide as that of the GTD. It is truly an excellent package.

When I picked up my Gti in December the dealer said to me they don't sell many Gti's. Their 'Bread and Butter' models were Golf/Polo diesels.
On a separate note, I was reading a popular VW magazine the other day and was wondering, do many people buy after market Tuning/accessories for their cars anymore i.e. replacement suspension, Hi-Fi units etc. when so many cars are bought on pcp's or leased.

Since i started looking at buying a Golf Gti over the last 2 months, I have only seen 1 on the road. I see lots of GTD's and  even a few R's. I was wondering why GTI's were so rare. . .

I see lots of GTD's and R's but I also see quite a few GTi's.

Seen an R in night blue the other day and he mentioned how good mine sounded with the sport and sound pack.
