I can't believe we are at a point where a stock golf r can hit 60 in 4.2 seconds.

The swirl marks on both cars  were they supplied by VW Solihull by any chance

Aren't they quoted 4.8 to 100kph? Cup 2 tyres will have made a big difference as well. Was it down hill? Still shows what a wonderful car the R is.

Maybe the GTi wheels aren't as bad as I originally thought. Would need to see them in real life but look better in that video than pics I have seen.

I'm pretty sure I've seen pre-facelift DSG Golf R's hit 0-60 time of 4.4 seconds so 4.2 isn't far off.

The very first frame of the GTI alloys - on the tyres it says... dun, dun, da... Bridgestone  There was a bit of wheel spin on the GTI Performance launch. No surprise on those tyres.

That was not the standard Golf R. Cup 2 tyres, 4WD and 65 horses make all the difference.

... and yet he said the GTI was more responsive and all the car you are going to need in the real world

I don't think the Cup 2 tyres are what's made the difference.  My TTS has the same engine, horsepower etc as the facelift R, and that's been timed at 4.1 0-60 (book says 4.6), so I'd expect the R to be able to do the same on normal daily tyres.

Far better in the flesh. They are quite chunky and angular compared to the Austins

Gotta say, that video has me doubting my decision to get a GTI. Or maybe it is just the beer

Sticking to my original reasons -

- never had a GTI before.
- GTI should be a noticeable improvement in performance for me (especially when fitted with better tyres!)
- lower insurance, can run on ordinary petrol, more economical, more responsive, better interior (?)
- can fit tow bar for kayak trailer.
- all things considered: the better real world car for me.
- and, did I mention, I have never had a GTI before = decision made!

That R is seriously quick .  However I didn't realise how dull the interior was and also the GTi without tartan seats doesn't look so good.  Both are excellent cars but are they worth £10-15 K + trade-in on my '64 plate Mk7 GTi PP with less than 20k miles?  The answer is "no".  I'll hang on for the Mk8.

Yep, you wait until MK8 with equally 'dull' interior(which is fine for me). They only do practical, that's why we love them.
