If I dangled £1300 quid in front of you in pound notes, would you think "a bit more zoomy car is what I want"?

Over 3 years that £3.9k of net pay, what 6.5k of gross salary? thats how 3p a mile snowballs into quite a big packet.

As a place to be while travelling, any of the performance golfs are lovely. Maybe sometimes its best to bury the need for performance and be sensible.

I dunno, I'm a tight Yorkshireman and worst still, my Yorkshire wife has handbag based desires on my earnings!

No I don't think would but as it happens my mileage is going down to around 10k a year

30+mpg  ...40mpg  ...I'm obviously doing something very wrong...averaging 30 on a good day, admittedly that is a shortish 7 mile commute, 5 mile on motorway with little traffic.  Think I'd better put some V Power in next fill and try a bit harder.

Hi Pixwix I recall we had an exchange a few months back about this, still no improvement? From your description above, getting to 40 seems unlikely as the run is too short and a good proportion of it is with a cold engine. I'd expect around 33-36 from mine but can't be sure as clearly haven't tried your route. How fast are you going, honestly now.... Better economy is going to be under 70 and best 60 and under. Does your car use any oil? Despite being sceptical, I filled up with Tesco Momentum and it does seem to have made a difference, economy is very good and it seems to run a bit better. It could be all in my head though but I think for £2.50 extra a tank, it's probably worth it.

Sorry, I don't follow that. How is the GTI £1320 more? Are you saying that the Golf R is £2680 more than a GTD? Are you filling that GTD with green diesel

My mileage has dropped a lot also. The GTD is barely warmed up on my journey in and out of town. I still expect the GTI to be more expensive to run. The difference should be less than £1 a day for me and it should be worth it.

Fair enough that adds up, but there are other things I would rather cut back on.

Go and use the website... you put in two cars to compare, how many miles a year you do and it gives you options for "real world" or "manufacturer" consumption figures.

I don't know how many miles our friend inputted, but it must be more than 20k pa, because at 20k it was about £600 pa for GTD vs GTI and yes, double that for GTD vs R.

Fred has hit the nail on the head. I didn't realise that you did so many miles. Between the time you spend in your car and the time you spend on this forum - how do you get any work done

You said recently that you were Irish. And you don't get the green diesel reference

Just so you know, agricultural diesel in Ireland is green. Though I'm guessing you already know that.

I put in 60,000 miles a year because that was the mileage I was doing when I ordered the car. I have somewhere around 7k on it already. However my annual mileage is going down to around 10k later in the year but I didnt know that when I ordered the car.

Same as me then. My mileage was going to be around 20-25k a year but then due to a position change at work (promotion), it's dropped massively to around 9-10k per year. If I'd have known that at the time of ordering last year, I would have most certainly been driving a GTI and not my GTD right now, and to hell with the added fuel costs for such a small mileage.

Ah well, such is life. It's not like the GTD imposes massive penalties on me over a GTI (just a little bit slower, a little more noisy and not "quite" as sharp), but overall it's still a cracking car, and for me is averaging approx. 45mpg and that's just to and from work (around 8-9 miles each way), with nearly 60mpg on a run. I know the GTI would be about 10-15mpg down but that's still not bad for a 220-230ps hot hatch !
