Long term musings....
« on: 07 April 2017, 23:55 »
I picked up my GTI in July 2013.

I've just had the hubs painted and on the way home I thought how absolutely brilliant it has been over the years - my perfect car. It's been to Germany 6 times (including a couple of Wolfsburg factory visits), had an old fridge in the back, a roofbox (and a shed) on the roof, done the school run, taken me and my family all around the U.K and the occasional time the mother-in-law has had a lift she hasn't even complained about it being uncomfortable.

45k and the only real issues have been wheel refurbs and the rusty hubs. Dealer(s) have been very good.
Michelin tyres, Bosch wipers, extended VW warranty, VW breakdown cover, VW screenwash, shell V power fuel, GTI mug and thermos cup, GTI towel, 4 VW dealer services. My wife thinks I'm a GTI fanboy

What a fantastic car. An outstanding everyday car, drives great, looks classy, practical and doesn't cost the earth to run.

It still makes me smile everyday.

Bluefin :undecided: :undecided:  still not sure...

Sums up the car nicely. Hard to fault a car that acn do it all, isn't it?

Love mine too.     (So much that I can't imagine putting a shed on the roof!!!!)     :embarrassed:

It's always good to see threads like this.
It sums up what the GTI is all about.

It also sums up how to get decent value for money out of the thing!
I never keep my VW's long as I tend to use them as a second car and as I don't have much time and even less energy I try and keep my cleaning regime to little and often so if there's much danger of the thing getting filthy I tend to use my other car.
I always get good value for money out of my old runabout cars that I keep until they drop, but my VW's tend to be just bought as a project car that I'll have for a while, fiddle about with it doing a few mods and then move it on. So it's always nice to see a well cared for car that's been used properly and proves what a great all rounder the GTI is (or GTD or R for that matter).

I'd definitely consider the Bluefin if I were you. I've had a good few remaps in my time and the Bluefin gives a good boost to the power without chasing silly numbers so should prove reliable long term. I've not tried it on a mk7 but I'd definitely consider it again and did look into it when I had my mk7 GTI first of all but the ECU's were still Bluefin-proof at that time so it meant the only option would have been a Superchips dealer re-flash which wasn't ideal for my needs.
I spent a few months doing 700 plus miles a week in a Bluefin mk6 and it ran faultlessly though some pretty nasty winter weather.

Nice long term summary.

Great to read that the car has excelled, lived up to and exceeded your expectations. Sounds like it's met all your needs and dealt with whatever you have asked of it...admirably, you can't ask for much more than that.

Like Mr Ex, I love reading early, mid and long term reviews of the same car, to take you through the length of ownership, with any ups and downs.  Like you, I tend to keep cars for 3-4 years and find it really interesting to hear how others' ownership progresses with the years.

Maybe it's the right time to refresh with bluefin or similar.

When I read the shed bit I pictured Frank Spencer.

Oooh Betty!

Sorry to disappoint but it was just a small flat packed shed strapped to the roof bars as I was too tight to pay for delivery. Had a 9m extendable ladder on the top once as well...

Oooh Betty!

I wonder how many on here have no idea what you mean? I actually wet myself looking at that when I was small and my father said 'ooh Betty' to my mother.

No Frank, that's no better, although I can appreciate your parsimony, an attitude that sees you well
