sensor faults
« on: 03 October 2005, 10:09 »
Morning all, plugged my golf into diagnostics the other day and it came back with 3 faults - Engine coolant temperature sensor (which is why my air con's not working), air mass meter (no surprise there then) and an intermittent fault with the hall sensor. Anybody know what this is and where it is?

Cheers,
Paul.

depends on which engined mk4 golf it is... on the 1.8 20v non turbo and turbo models the hall sender (or camshaft position sensor) is located at the left had side of the cylinder head (once plastic engine cover removed) ill take a picture of mine to show you in a while, if its any other model im unsure???

for the list of faults youve shown, i would replace the temp sensor 1st then reset the ecu and give it a run and then see what codes are showing after your test run, the temp sensors are about £20, and can give poor running as most of the time the ecu will think the engine is cold and over fuel it, this can also give false faulty maf sensor readings, as for the hall sensor fault could be a mixture of things, mine was showing this and there was nothing wrong with it, mine was down to my vvt unit throowing the inlet cam out of time (due to being set up by a garage that didnt know what they were doing).

let us know what model golf you have and may be able to help a bit more??

Afternoon, cheers for the help so far. I have 1.8 20V non-turbo model (AGN). I'm replacing the temp sensor tonight as this is what is causing my air con to not work and the reason i borrowed the diagnostics in the first place.

I kind of expected it to throw up the MAF code as sometimes the car is sluggish and 'jerky' under acceleration but from what you said, maybe thats the temp sensor as well? It doesn't do it very often and apart from that it's running fine. Although a few weeks ago i was driving along, about 60ish and accelerating, and the engine seemed to cut out, only for a fraction of a second, then come back again. I was no-where near the rev limiter and it's not done it since. Could this be a symptom of the Hall sensor? (i dont even know what one is so forgive me if that's a ridiculous question!)

I dont know much about the fualt codes but the guy i borrowed the diagnostics off said the hall sensor fault was an intermittent fault and something to do with the voltage and he suggested it was a bad connection. I don't really know the guy (friend of a friend etc) so i'm not sure how competent he is!

I'll replace the temp sensor and re-test as you suggested but any more advise would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

just had my coolant temp sensor replaced (cost 24.99 for the part), i have 150bhp T model and had problems re-starting the engine after short journeys and with coolant temp gauge on dash. Infact the other week i almost sent my dad to sleep as he was parked behind me in his mk5 when i had starting problems. after several attempts to start my car she eventually started to tick over... the revs automatically kicked in in an attempt to burn the excess fuel that flooded in the system. the resultant random revving by the engine and milltek exhaust popping sent so much gas out back the old fella nearly passed out !!!

all fine now and pleased to report my dad has fully recovered

Guess what...

Mines just done the same thing this morning. Went to the petrol station which is just 2 minutes up the road, filled up, then it wouldn't start - Fookin' great! at a petrol station, 8.30 in the morning, with 5 people behind you waiting for the pump! It eventually started on the 3rd try.

How did you sort yours out or did it just solve itself?
