There are now plenty of 2014 Golf Rs with around 15-18k miles for not much more money, worth considering?

Yeah, good point. TBH, I've only just started looking and am in no rush for a new (used) car. Still love my Type R so would need to find the right car before giving up that.

Also, just looking at the ad I can see it was first added to Auto Trader on the 17 Jan which is quite a long time so maybe it's not all that. Here's the ad http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201701171395958?make=VOLKSWAGEN%26model=GOLF

Mib is vw slang for the infotainment unit. As well as the model (cms, nav or navpro) they come in generations. 1 was 2013 till end of 2015., 2 was 2016 until this month and 3 is brand new on the face lift. They get better over time.. Bigger screens, more functionality.
Current: Mk8 GTI DSG, Adelaides, DCC, HUD, HK, Winter Pack, Rear Camera.. Aka "HMS Weasel"

Gone: 2017 Mk7.5 GTD,manual, NavPro
Gone: 2014 Mk7 GTD, manual, NavPro, DCC

Ah ha, thanks for this. Won't be able to afford anything beyond a 2014 model in either GTI or R so I'll have to be happy with MIB1

Just looking at R's now and they're not as expensive as I thought they would be (saying that they are 1 or 2k more than a GTI)

The GTi seems over priced, manual gearbox, the R obviously has 4wd and a decent base spec, and 2014 with DSG for about £20k, but I always barter on price. Good luck. P.S.  Dealers will have a lot of PXs since 1st March that may not be advertised yet, worthwhile phoning them.

They're asking £17k for it which looking at others on Auto Trader seems pretty good?

What does MIB1,2,3 mean? Forgive my ignorance.

MIB1 was a bit dated compared to what was on offer from others. MIB2 came out in the middle to late 2015 I think and MIB3 is what you get in the new facelift Golf(mentioned here as the Mk7.5)

For the money you're spending I wouldn't rush into a purchase, take your time and ask loads of questions on her to learn about what you need to know on this thread. Lots of very informed people on here.

Thanks for this. Yep, decided to hold back on this one and do a bit more research. As I said, no hurry to replace my car anyway. Just fancied a change.

A 1st generation nav pro will be fine. I didn't have any issues with mine on my 2013 gtd. It doesn't connect to the internet, so what it's a sat nav and radio unit not a home PC.
TCR, Pure Grey, DCC, Dynaudio and Climate Screen.

Some people might like CarPlay and use a better satnav and a more up-to-date system.

You don't get decent real time traffic, you don't get Google streetview for precision arrivals, you can't connect your phone for anything other than voice.

Two out of three of those are SUPPOSED to work on Navpro MIB1, but they didn't in the UK.

It wasn't worth the £1000+ extra cost over Nav.

MIB2 actually delivers what was promised.

Does anybody know the exact dates of MIB1, 2, 3? I'm thinking the cost of getting a car with MIB2 will be outside of my budget but it'd be nice to know what I'm looking for when hunting for a GTI or R.

I think the reason I liked the Pro was the large screen which I thought would be better for SatNav purposes.
