There's a healthy tuning community on the R forum, and I think that's the model most people will own if they want to extract more power as the GTI has traction issues as standard, never mind once tuned.
When trying a DTUK box on my PP GTI I could spin the front wheels through the first three gears and hardly move. I doubt that car was even at standard R power.
Obviously once rolling a tuned GTI is very quick but you've gotta get rolling first

It's easier to throw a few hundred at an R to get a useable 360bhp than it is to throw several thousand at a GTI to give it a less useable 360bhp.
And as madmanmart says, many are on finance or leased and most are still under warranty.
