Occasional misfire Golf Mk6 1.4 TSi
« on: 29 January 2017, 16:04 »
Wondering if anyone can explain an intermittent problem we've got where engine seems to hesitate/misfire just for a second when applying power, and occasionally lasts a few seconds when it feels like it's not firing on all four and the EML has flashed for a few seconds

I've got a code reader which shows no faults, so at a bit of a loss.  It's a 2009 model, with the 160bhp version.  We've also tried both normal and super unleaded, and had the problem occur with both.

Any help / ideas appreciated!

I had the same with my previous GT160 (supercharged/turbocharged). That made it the most unreliable car I ever had after 5 misfire breakdowns-quite simply it was dangerous. Iirc, the car went through 2 sets of different spark plugs, 2 or 3 engine maps, 2 sets of fuel injectors. If even got connected up live to the factory. After all that (from only 2000 miles old) I still wasn't convinced as I could detect a slight misfire the very next day after a week in Germany-that was the final straw for me, I traded the car in at VW and pushed for goodwill at VW UK

Worth bearing in mind, on some cars piston damage could occur. The misfire was/is a known problem

Sorry for the potential bad news. I would think by now a fix has been found, mine was 4 years ago
Hope you get it sorted, please keep us updated

Got it sorted.....just needed a couple of the ignition coils replaced - although now just waiting for the other two to pack up!

Thanks for suggestions, sounds like yours was bit of a nightmare, glad I didn't have that big an issue!

Cheers.

I'd go ahead and replace the other two as they will now be weak from working harder to compensate for the two you have replaced

At least then you know all 4 are good and won't leave you stranded

Cheers, good advice - particularly as it's the wifes car so could avoid me getting another breakdown call!
