Every so often a Golf Syncro pops up on ebay and they usually go for less than a grand. Just get one and swap the engine for a nice 16v or VR6.

Am I right in thinking that the running gear in the standard Golf Syncro is the same as the G60 Syncro and maybe the Rallye?
In which case you could easily put more power through it.

A while ago one of the mags featured a Mk1 that had had the running gear transplanted from a Syncro and had a 1.8T running 300bhp or so.

Are you referring to the mk2 syncro (1800 carb )( GU engine) ? If so they have drum rear brakes but I'm sure they have the mounting points for the rear calipers so I'd imagine it wouldn't be to difficult to convert them to discs .

Hope this helps , Oli
