No its just like the valuation for company car tax... List price including options.  And yes different people pay different tax on that too depending on what you spec.

That's mental, so two Golf R drivers could be paying different tax because of extra option boxes they ticked. Surely a better way would be the price of the standard car without extras? I don't suppose common sense and the government go hand in hand.

If options weren't included you might get some crafty manufacturers offering their cars for £39k but that was literally for just the shell.
You had to add steering wheel, wheels etc until its well over £40k and you don't pay the new tax!

I remember when hot takeaway food started to get taxed, chip shops round our way were giving you free chips but you paid for the salt and vinegar. So the price stayed the same as it was before the tax hike.

It didn't last long though

Yeah, this is a concern for my next car. My GTI is just over 3 years old (with a 5 year warranty) and I do fancy another Golf, but probably an R...which I know will not come in at under £40k as I specced my GTI to £35k list...without leather or PP.

As a 7.5 Golf will not be available to me until to tax changes come into effect, I think I will now wait it out for the Mk8 (or something else) unless there are MASSIVE discounts on the facelift cars!

Just keep the spec under 40k?

It is possible to go crazy with the options, but equally perfectly possible to stay under 40k.

The problem will only get worse anyway - the 40k limit will be around for several years (I doubt they will review that number before 5 or 10 years are up) yet inflation and post-Brexit price rises will push the list price upwards anyway. Your Mk8 will definitely need at least one less option to hit under 40k.

More and more vehicles will come under the extra tax regime - which is what HMRC actually want.
