Guys have you seen the new car tax being brought in from the 1st April 17. Might be worth working out how much extra this is going to cost you, you might be better off ordering one asap .

Does anyone know what the current car tax is on the GTI?

Yes they are. Something I didn't realise under the new system is that for cars with a list price of £40k or more, there's an additional £310 VED surcharge payable each year for the first 5 years, after which time it reverts to the new standard flat rate of £140.

With the facelift Golf, if you go crazy with the options, will it be possible to end up with a list price of £40k or more? Probably, on some of the top models. If so, a mk7.5 Golf GTI specced up to the hilt with an assumed list price of £40k-plus and the GTI emissions of 145.2 - 148 g/km (from German VW website), VED would be; year 1 £510, each of the next 4 years; £450. (Sub £40k list price, it would be year 1; £200 and years 2-5; 140 each year).

That new VED scheme is barking mad.

I don't just mean from my own personal perspective - this actively encourages people further down the line to not care about environmental damage with their second hand car choices.

That April 2017 registered 4x4 suddenly becomes highly attractive!

On the other hand, the 2016 4x4 you currently own will be massively worthless.

Alot depends on what colour your gonna be wanting on a facelift or new golf as I notice they have tweaked the colour options and done away with the carbon grey to me seems to be a mistake as it's a very nice colour albeit I'm not  bias but it's a shame

is  the new VED rate based on the price you pay for the car  based  makers list price
or what you pay after you negotiate a discount from the dealer ?

The government VED document at the link in reply #14 above refers to list price. I have always understood manufacturers list price to mean the published price in price brochures / on configurators, plus the published price for any options selected, and not the price after any finance contribution or discount negotiated by the customer with the dealer. If so, this makes a £40k Golf a reality from a VED perspective, especially a Golf R or highly specced GTI / GTD.

That's mental, so two Golf R drivers could be paying different tax because of extra option boxes they ticked. Surely a better way would be the price of the standard car without extras? I don't suppose common sense and the government go hand in hand.
