It should light up - You will need a replacement bulb from the main dealers - I couldnt find one anywhere else (including Halfords). Remove the Instrument cluster and just hlaf-twist in the replacement.
Getting the instrument clusterout is a bit fiddly, especially when you need to reach round the back to un-plug the speedo cable, but it is an easy job amd should take no more than 20 minutes to do the lot.
I don't own this anymore - I just can't be arsed to change the picture

I did manage to find some in Halfords a little while ago but they were a lot more pricey than the VW ones. Go for higher wattage too if your clocks are dim. I think standard (at least on my 83 MK1) was 1.2W but I think you can fit larger 2W bulbs - makes a big difference to the dim clocks - do them all whilst cluster is out.

There's posts about max size bulbs (in wattage) over on MK1 Golf Owners Club Worth double checking

This is not very technical, but occasionally my MFA/clock light goes out and I find a couple of gentle taps around the area brings it back on !
......now officially dubless.
