Map POI's
« on: 25 October 2016, 09:33 »
Discover Navigation works very well but naturally sucks at POI's (as most car navigation systems). More often than not, I have to find the address of the place I'm headed from my smartphone and provide that address to the Navigation to start my journey. (I don't use Gmaps via Android Auto due to a number of inconveniences such as the lack of MFD integration or the fact you can't switch to other screens without losing all navigation info).

So, I was wondering how could the system be enriched with much more POI's than it has as stock. Is this even possible to do via some one-off update or the only way is to have the car permanently connected on-line?

Well, you can bulk load POI's from CarNet online (assuming you had a MIB2) or from a SD car (if you have MIB1).

PocketGPS have all sorts of POI lists available (as do many other places).

I guess the big question is what do you actually want to be able to find?

You could spend a lot of time mucking around with this, creating a massive cumbersome list of POI's and still find the thing that you wanted wasn't there.

Isn't it easier to use a phone to find a postcode and just chuck that in?

Hopefully the facelift will address this.
My last Audi was miles ahead of the Golf. You could go online and search for wherever you wanted and then had an option to navigate there.

Like many things computer wise, VW (and other car manufacturers) seem pathetically slow at the uptake whilst still charging the earth for their lame crapware they load their cars with.

They really need to get some proper computer skills.

Err. current MIB II can search on line for POI's - obviously you need to have your phone tethered first.

As Sootchucker wrote, it is possible to directly access/search for online POI's and that would be one way solve it. Online connectivity for the MIB2 is there and works pretty well for those who don't mind having the car fully on-line all the time. I don't quite get the negativity.

The question is how/whether it is possible to do this without constant 4G and wi-fi tethering for which (both) I have a great dislike and limit their use to the absolute minimum, ie. not driving around with either of them enabled.

So, I'm guessing it has to be either a one-off online, mass POI update (if that's an option) or a manual POI update via the SD card (even from external sources if compatible). Anyone aware of any of that being possible or other non-permanently-online work-around?

I had poi's on my nav pro and now have them on the mib2 in the Tiguan. I'll be using the same file on the new Golf when it comes, just uploaded onto the unit. Is that what you mean?

Yes, what you describe sounds like what I'm after: much more extra POI's than what comes with stock maps. So where do I get these file(s) and how do I upload it onto the unit? Links are welcome.

Depends what poi's you want. The nav system will only allow 10 poi's at any one time so you'd need to choose which ones you wanted.

It should allow more than 10! People use the POI's with speed camera databases and sadly there are definitely more than 10 of them!

Maybe 10 user defined categories...
