Stereo Upgrade
« on: 13 October 2016, 18:56 »
I've got a Mk6 GTi with the RNS510 head unit. Irritatingly, although it's got the phone button on the steering wheel and on the unit itself, it won't actually allow me to connect my phone via Bluetooth (believe an additional module is needed). When I purchased the car used from VW I got them to supply and install their version of the Parrot system as part of the deal so I've been able to make handsfree calls but not using the steering wheel or head unit button.

Is there any way of upgrading the stereo to do this and allow me to play music (Spotify etc.) via BT through the radio or am I better upgrading the entire stereo to something that gives all of that plus DAB?

Cheers

Retro fitting integrated Bluetooth is very straightforward www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=151928.0 but the dealers won't do it as it uses an aftermarket piggyback wiring loom.

That won't give you DAB tho'. You could buy an RNS510 DAB, but add that price to the cost of the Bluetooth and you are into the realms of an aftermarket radio that will do much more.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

I have recently replaced my rcd 510 with one of these:

although i had factory bluetooth i wanted DAB and NAV and the RNS 510 DAB units around at the time we all silly money. I did have to solder in a screen mount antenna as the standard DAB antenna is pony but other than that its all been spot on. Being an android OS you can use all the apps you use on your phone (cant see any reason why you couldnt use spotify). Also you can buy a 4G dongle so its constantly online so you can stream music or you can tether your phone to it and use its internet connection

That seems like a good option. Does it have Nav as standard or do you just use Google maps (presumably need to be connected to 4G to support the latter)?
