Mk7 R going, new car just arrived
« on: 07 October 2016, 21:46 »
Hey guys, as much as I absolutely love my R, the same practicality issues surround it now as it did when I handed back the Jag. The boot still isn't big enough, the 3 doors just doesn't work with 2 baby seats and although not a big issue, the MPG isn't great when you do 25K a year.

Instead of looking to replace the R with something the is similar, I went a completely different direction.

So hello to the W213 Mercedes Benz E-Class E220d Premium plus

The car is ridiculously comfortable, has almost every toy going and shift well enough for a big car. 0-62 in 7.3 and 72mpg from a 2.0d engine

600w burmester stereo
Keyless entry and hands free tailgate
Twin Panoroof
Heated front and rear seats
Reversing and 360 camera
DVD player
SSD satnav system and storage
Wifi hotspot
Multi beam LED lights (seriously googles these, its bloody mental!)
Command online system
64 ambient light colours system

It's not comparable to the R in any way. I still love my R and would chose to drive that over the merc when I'm alone, but needs must!

Very classy Lee :afro:
That interior looks a bit like an acid trip though!

disclaimer: I'm too boring to have ever had an acid trip, I'm
Just old enough to have watched 1970's children's television, most of which must've been designed and filmed by people on acid trips!

You can dial it down, but turned it up for the photos. It's not getting a welcome reception on VWROC for some reason. It's a great car to be honest, I was really apprehensive about changing because of the mess with the Jag.

Does anything get a good reception on that forum? Unless it has a twin turbo V8 anything gets hammered over there!
I'd say the Merc is more suited to your needs than a 3 door Golf maybe.
At the end of the day it's a workhorse for you and it looks a nice place to eat up the miles.
It won't drive like a hot Golf but it's not designed to. It will however be very quick with a tuning box and the electronics on it look good, lots of toys to play with.
Classy too. Nice colour.
The ambient lighting reminds me of the inside of a MINI, it doesn't photograph well but is pretty cool when it's dark.

Here is one dialled down to a normal level.

The hardest decision was deciding to let the Golf go, I could have got a cheaper car for work and family and keep the Golf for when it's just me, but given that that would only be the odd blast here and there and it would mean spending most of my time in a car that wasn't what I wanted just to keep it.

It's a great comfortable, quiet, mile muncher with a cracking sound system.

I'd never choose to get in it for a fun blast down a country road, but it does the job it's designed for exceptional well.

Congratulations man. The new E Class looks so much more handsome than the old model. It looks reassuringly Germanic

The ambient lighting looks incredible! As do the insane hi-res displays.

I don't know why people give others a hard time just because they've changed "brand". Quite childish. We're all petrol heads at the end of the day and buying a new car is an exciting moment (well for most lucky folk anyway).

I'm moving onto pastures new myself very soon. BMW M140i imminent. I shall post up here when it arrives and has had its new car detail. I imagine some folk won't like it  :smug:

Enjoy your soft, luxurious, wafting motoring

That's really nice inside, and IMO much better than the C Class, nice choice

Now you can get a proper weekend toy, totally impractical

Great cars for long distances

I'm not sure about the twin screens just being positioned side by side - I wish it looked better integrated

I just wonder what the twin LCD screens are like for driving at night. I mean, does the brightness of the backlight get to eyes after a while?

This is a criticism of all LCD screens which need a backlight. Cost aside, I wonder if OLED screens would work best in dark cockpits

It has a night mode which uses a light sensor so it's worked out pretty well. Not had any issues yet, but as it's still BST I haven't had that much night driving. Completely agree on OLED, for a car that's pushing £50k OLED would have made it feel just that little bit more up market. No doubt the new S Class will be rocking thst
