The GTI is definitely prettier! I don't have a particular preference to either car's styling as I also quite like the R's understated menace.
I'd probably get shot for this on the R forum but I do think the GTI PP actually handles better than the R and pulls better at low speed (manual car, the DSG will mask this).
But there's no getting away from the extra turn of speed the R has over 4000 rpm plus better off the line traction.
If you don't use high revs very often then the GTI is the better bet possibly as it's loads better on fuel and the PP diff makes wheel-spin a rare event unless you have both wheels pointing dead straight ahead.
The GTI has unfortunately become a very underrated car, it performs way better than the horsepower would suggest.
