On Friday i went down to local VW dealership to see if there was a GTi in Black to give me an idea of what my Clubsport S would look like - a young lad came up to me and asked if i wanted a gti ...?! He had a 5 month old GTi with Performance pack, upgrade wheels, nav etc etc and had just been offered £20k and was set to lose £9k .... So be careful guys - these cars seriously depreciate!!! Andrew
Sounds like he paid list price and was wanting to trade in, there's no surprise there that the trade in offer is significantly less than list price for a new car.
Yep .... But a 30% loss in 5 months ....
Unfortunately with the big discounts VW allow the flip side is high depreciation. There's only so much money in a car and if people know they can get a huge discount on a new (soon to be defunct) car then they won't pay strong money for a second hand model.
The cheap leased R's haven't helped the situation and VW now find theirselves in a similar position to BMW.
BMW don't let MINI dealers openly sign up with brokers so the discounts are low and the forecourt prices remain high. BMW themselves though long since sold out to the fleet market so people won't pay out full list or anywhere near on their cars, hence the massive depreciation on new BMW's now (even the more fashionable smaller models and SUV's). Merc are going the same way and I suppose that's why the Germans can still shift a lot of metal from the factories keeping the economy buoyant. Stack 'em high and sell 'em cheap to fight off the Koreans and even other Euro manufacturers whilst still trading on the solid German engineering name.
That's why the Germans are dreading Brexit as we lap up their cars!
