Crunchy second gear

Ive read on another site that my gearbox may need rebuilding because of a crunchy second gear?

Is this true?

It depends on how bad it crunches.  Second gear on mine crunches when the engine is cold for the first few minutes.  To avoid this I just pause whilst the clutch is pressed and let the revs drop a little and this allows it to slot in nicely.  If your's is crunching all the time then you are probably chipping off fragments of metal which will be causing wear to the rest of the gearbox.  Can't be good!

Worn 2nd gear synchromesh, very common with these gearboxs. Before getting it rebuilt, try changing the gearbox oil for some synthetic, castrol syntrax is very good.

and adding a weighted shift rod of the mk3 will also reduce the feel of the scrunch you get thru the gearstick

Your 2nd gear synchromesh is worn. Very common, my cabrio crunches very slightly too. Well worth trying what golfvr6 and Gambit have suggested and changing the oil for synthetic.
I've recently stripped a couple of boxes down and am hoping to learn how to fix them........starting with MK1_BOY's which is currently in bits.......watch this space.

it doesnt crunch alot but i would prefer it not to be there at all. Would a weighted shifted rod and a short shift kit solve this u think?

I dont know anything about gearboxes, THEY LOOK COMPLICATED! ???

Short shift will make it worse!!

You need a longer time between changing from 1st to 2nd to prevent the crunch, not a shorter one!

Used boxes have always been hit or miss and now the newest Mk2's are 11 years old it can only be worse.

I'd find a 'box specialist and have a rebuild.  I've had them done twice (two different Mk2's) and have been very happy with results.

Cheers
