In May I purchased a new car for my wife

Golf 1.0 TSI Match BlueMotion Edition

Not seen a lot on the forum about this Enginel so just wanted to give everyone my opinion on what I think of it
Previously had a Mk6 GTD which didn't like so then change that to a Beetle TSI 160 Convertible (keep the wife happy) and after finding out we are having a baby decided to change back to a golf.

Spoke with a contact of mine a Stafford VW and as I wanted petrol I had two choices either 1.4 125/150
I liked the sound of either.
After going on the Configurator I saw the 1.0 TSI option which at a first glance looks like a poor choice at the time Audi didn't offer that engine otherwise I would of driven one at work and got a feel for how the engine responds.Audi have just launched this engine in the Pi A3 and Q2
Stafford found a unassigned car at the port with a lot of optional extras

Parking Pack
17 inch Singapore wheels
90% Tints
Heated Steering Wheel
Winter Pack

We took delivery of the car and since that day I'm impressed,i get to drive many fast cars at work and including my Kitcar when we get the weather.
The early torque delivery of this engine is brilliant and makes for easy driving but also never feels like it is struggling for power.I was going to promptly get a tuning box after delivery of the car but I'm still yet to do so.

MPG-Since owning the car on average it's getting 50mpg which I am happy with as I don't hang about.
No road tax to pay either
A number of trips to Heathrow Airport and West Ham Stadium and easily get over 65mpg when cruise control on at 65-67.

To many people this review won't help but I just wanted to give some feedback on a great little engine.

 :cool: it's great to read your review and also good to see something a bit left field on here rather than the usual models.
These little turbo engines are the future, fast enough without being silly fast, torquey for their small capacity unlike modern normally aspirated 16v engines, and good on fuel.

What didn't you like about the GTD?

What do you do at Audi?

The problem with the GTD is I felt it was trying to look and feel like a GTi when it wasn't anything like it especially with a heavy diesel under the bonnet.had it remapped to see if that helped me engage with the car but something was missing,not saying it's a bad car but I think VW should of done what Audi did with the A3 170/184 TDI's and just leave them in a Sline/Rline trim and not given them the Visual appearance of a GTi.

Can I bring the wife's A1 to your place? My local Audi garage are completely useless. Picked up her A1 last night following their 3rd attempt at fitting a door seal straight and it still isn't right. They dented the windscreen pillar doing it and got it into the bodyshop to repair. I may never buy another Audi considering the local clowns that will do servicing/warranty work on it.

Back to the Golf. Is that 1.0T the pne woth the electric turbo (no lag)? My mate car shares with a Skoda Fabia with the electric turbo equipped small engine (not sure if it is a 1.0 or 1.2) - he says it is surprisingly nippy given the lack of lag.

I do have to wonder about the longevity of these tiny engines - they're working harder more often than a larger engine, which means that real life mpg isn't all it's cracked up to be. Been in an A3 150TDI Saloon for a few weeks as the wife wouldn't drive the A1's courtesy car. Despite lugging a bigger car shell around, the A3 was equal in fuel economy to the wife's 1.6TDI 116ps A1 which is working harder more often. I'd rather have the 150TDI lump.

I think the GTI is a good 30ps underpowered for the badge it is carrying - the CS is pretty much where the standard GTI should have been, especially considering what the 2WD hot hatch competition is putting out now.

If you give the dealership a call and speak to service they will happily book you in.

The 1.0 TSI engine doesn't have a electric turbo, I believe the only VAG car to have this is the new SQ7.

I agree what you saying about the GTD I'm just not a fan of them and obviously its all down to personal preference.

The A3 150 in the real world might be better on fuel because of the more torque being generated meaning less effort is needed meaning less fuel used. 

No Brand can guarantee the longevity of a engine but as we get a warranty on new cars I'm not worried about that. The car has a long life cam belt so the main thing is no chance of any timing chain issues which has previously been seen on TSI/TFSI engines.

I see the gti as a Warm hatch and a CS/R as a hot hatch.Im currently looking at a ABT ecu module for my mums gti which should increase the power up to 300bhp approx.I believe the people who buy a gti are buying a gti not a gti which they think should be as fast as a Golf R/CS. Also the gti fills a gap which Audi doesn't fill with the A3.Audi has Launched a 2.0 TFSI S line model with 190ps and stopped the 1.8 TFSI.

What would you say is the average current car BHP? I'd say it was probably just under 100bhp, so a car with 230BHP is far beyond "average".

The original GTI wasn't a Ferrari, with 110bhp weighing 810kg... vs the Mk7 PP 230bhp in 1400kg.

Power to weight, the Mk7 is more powerful, not less.

The hot hatches (if you remember) of the 80's and 90's were an insurance nightmare (I had one of those Williams Renault Clio's and *ouch*), which is why they went away for a long time.

How does the competition stack up? About the same really, apart from the oddball nutter things that aren't really something someone would buy to use as a daily.

And that was always the thing with the Mk1 GTI, it was faster than most on the road except the supercars but was able to be used as a normal car.

I think we forget this often.

To the OP - good review on an interestinb engine, quite fancy an UP! with the 1.0T for my OH (not really for her benefit though if I'm honest!) but she won't say goodbye to her Lupo. A few pictures wouldn't go amiss :whistle:

fredgroves - couldn't agree more, the GTI has far more power than I can find legal ways to use.

My wife's Audi A1 Sportback has a 1.0 TFSI 3 cylinder engine. It's not done 2000 miles yet but is showing an average of 50 mpg, it's a lovely car. I had a 1.0 T 125 Focus Ecoboost previously, that used to average 46mpg and with normal everyday driving never felt under powered or strained. Sometimes less is more!

Not sure what the point is you are trying to make, but you keep on making it :wink:

OP nice review I clicked specifically because this wasn't about something we see reviewed by owners every day, small eco petrol engines are the way of the future (short to medium term) and anything light and refinded with the same torgue is pretty much all we need for sensible driving.  On the back of this I had a look at the new Q2 today on the net but it doesn't appear they are selling it with the 1ltr engine, which i thought was odd as it would be ideal for that Q2.
