Nightmare!

So I go all excited this morning to pick up my new (61 Plate) Golf GTI, about 35 miles away. I see her there in the forecourt they have done everything they said they would to her. New brake pads, basic service, valet and a quarter of a tank. Brilliant, we sort out all the paperwork and I drive of in her. He says go easy on her for a few days with the new oil etc, plus not knowing the area I just keep her nice and steady to the motorway using my new Nav system, few little pouts of power along the way. Everything seems fine at this point. We get on the motorway and we are just cruising along, I decide to give it a little blast not much, doesn't seem to pick up as I thought it would so I ease of and just cruise again. then about 10 miles into the journey the engine light starts to flash up, I start to get a little worried but think in the back of my mind it probably just needs a good drive and some proper fuel in it. Then I notice the drive really isn't smooth at all, very jolty. When I ease of the accelerator you can feel it jolting and when I put my foot on it you can feel it jolt. The engine light flashed then disappeared about 4 more times on the 25 miles or so motorway drive.

Then I get of the motorway and at the lights Im standstill and I can hear and see the revs being lost then coming back, this is the exact same thing it did on the test drive and it was put down to lack of fuel and a good drive in a while which I bought! The car then cut out at the lights. I managed to get it restarted it then cut out a further 4 times in the 3 mile drive to my house! Only way I could stop it cutting out is by giving it revs at the lights. It now only starts if you rev it on start and continue to give it some form of revs otherwise completely cuts out.

I have phoned the sales garage, and they have said to get it into a local garage as soon as possible. Im supposed to be in work tomorrow and luckily I have managed to get the day off and there is a VW specialist around the corner from me. I aim to get her in there as soon as it opens and diagnosed.

Absolute nightmare and not the way I wanted to start my ownership. I am going to get the car throughly looked and and I want everything sorting out at the expense of the garage otherwise it is 100% going back.

Does anyone have any ideas? Im really hoping its the lack of quality fuel and maybe the fuel pump has blocked up?

Sorry to hear, you must be really disappointed.

The selling garage will obviously have to make good, with minimal inconvenience to you and quickly.

Unfortunately we've had our share of issues with selling garages in the last few years so if you encounter any big difficulties, PM me if you want and I'd be happy to share what we've learned on our travels, so as to ensure we get what we're entitled to, which is a fit for purpose car.

Let the garage you bought it from pick it up and return it there is plenty of other mk6 gtis about and this one seems to be a bad example

Be careful and make sure the garage you take it to, tell you how much it will cost to look at it etc and get it authorised by the supplying garage BEFORE they touch the car. Get everything in writing

You don't want to be piggy in the middle between the two garages arguing over the costs

Equally I would agree with Barry and get the supplying garage to collect the car and get it sorted. That way there is no complications for you

That's up to the OP. By rights the suppyling garage do have the opportunity to fix the car if they wish to do so

Sorry to hear about this OP! Definitely not the way you want ownership to start!

Others that have posted above have some helpful advice and more experience in this sort of situation than me. All I'll say is I hope you get it sorted soon and to your complete satisfaction so you can enjoy your new car!

Have you got Vagcom? Or know someone? Might be worth scanning it first to see what comes up, then you can be ready for what the dealer might fob you off with, do research and get information from other owners, then hopefully the garage wil think, 'he know what they are talking about' and get it sorted in an suitable time scale for you

Quick update guys,

Was diagnosed by the garage as a loose breather pipe, I had it checked and clipped back together by a friend and all has been good since.

Love the car, will post some pics once I get the private reg on her and get some decent pics.

Only thing that is a little annoying is the garage must of put 2 new budget tyres on, so handling isn't great and not so clever in the rain at all, struggle to put the power down. Why you would do that to a GTI I don't know. Will look to get some new ones on the front at least in the coming weeks, but these tyres are literally brand new so its a bit of shame.
