Everyone here with S&S tell me that it sounds actually quite good - but obviously its a totally fake engine noise.

I like it. Based on the description it shouldn't work but I believe it does. The German manufacturers are all using the same kit by the sounds of it as there's a "family" sound.

Interestingly Audi have decided to use one on the new TT RS, there's even a button on the console to change the sound, though I think it has exhaust flaps as well. Check the videos, it sounds pretty damn good actually.

The R and gti have it to make them sound like v8s. Loads of manufacturers doing it now. The first thing I'm doing will be to turn the soundaktor off or down.

Were not talking about the soundaktor (which is standard on all GTI/D & R) - Its the S&S pack (only on GTD) witch deletes the rear silencer and adds an integrated loud speaker into the exhaust pipe, thus creating a pretend exhaust note from the diesel engine.

This is correct, however, as pointed out above all manufacturers are doing this to meet the rules on noise emissions. Even Aston Martin and the like are at it. They realise people want cars to sound a particular way and the legislation means that it is no longer possible to do this mechanically (though some high end cars use exhaust flaps to keep the sound down below certain rev/throttle combinations).

Yes, correct, but the GTI and R don't have a speaker in the exhaust, only in the cabin.

Bottom line is the S&S pack makes the GTD sound like something it isn't. It's pretending to be a larger more powerful petrol engine car.
So the R and Gti are V8s are they?? Only difference is the sound is pumped inside.

So what you are saying is everyone with SS pack are trying to, or pretending to, make their CR 2.0 TDI 184 sound like a 2.5litre 5 pot 400 bhp TTRS/RS3?

Well whatever floats your boat, but it's not for me thanks 😳 My GTD is a diesel and I'm not going to try and hide it.

Kind of reminds me when I was 17 and we would put peco back boxes/induction kits on our 1.1 saxos/106 to make them sound like something else...

Red calipers are a nice touch though.

You'll probably get slightly more power with the s + s pack as the exhaust is straight through instead of with the back box on, not much but maybe a little.

I actually thought that myself when I first saw it, it's never been discussed on here?

Couple of kilos of weight decrease if nothing else... Although I dread to think about the future replacement of the magic exhaust... Probably not a problem yet.
Current: Mk8 GTI DSG, Adelaides, DCC, HUD, HK, Winter Pack, Rear Camera.. Aka "HMS Weasel"

Gone: 2017 Mk7.5 GTD,manual, NavPro
Gone: 2014 Mk7 GTD, manual, NavPro, DCC

Actually it has. I mentioned it when we got our car and then in a later post regarding S&S pack. Our car is much more urgent than the non S&S car we test drove. The lack of rear silencer and the fact the exhaust is largely straight through (albeit with a slightly longer centre box) is what I think is the difference. However, map changes are not impossible as VW seem unable to describe the content of the pack properly

Wow, you do read what you want to read don't you? The devices are programmable, they're used on mercs, audi's , vw's and I don't doubt every other German car maker. Diesel, Petrol, whatever, the manufacturer can choose what the sound is like. There's even a Kufatec box for these cars that lets you select a variety of different sounds.

Me personally, I don't ever think a diesel is going to sound like a 2.5 petrol, nor would I want to try. Making a diesel sound better? Very much so. You don't seem to have experienced the S&S pack for yourself but I will say that it sounds nothing like a V8/V6/Straight 6 or any other "nice" sounding "proper" engines making their natural noise, it does make a normally boring engine sound a bit nicer. But, as I said earlier, even those putting in "proper" engines are using these devices to "augment the audio track" of the engine.

You don't have to like it, you don't have to buy one (though the day is approaching where all cars will be "augmented"), not sure why you feel the need to berate the choices of others?

Good look buying in the future,, they're all at it.....

The S&S could be a secret Performance Pack for the GTD,  no but seriously, like you say, the lack of rear silencer must make a slight difference.

Your the one that said they all have a 'family' note and its being used on the TTRS??

Really don't want to 'experience' the S&S for myself thanks, seen plenty of videos when it first come out and IMO its just embarrassing.

No I didn't order it on my own GTD, but did considered it - purely for the red calipers and possibly gain from the rear silencer delete. But at the time of ordering I couldn't find out if the exhaust speaker could be easily disconnected without any problems, plus I went for TR so the red calipers wouldn't really stand out as much..

Oh and I do apologies if I have upset any of the S&S pack committee, but it was actually only meant to be a bit of light heated banter. (I know a few would have seen it this way)
Like I said before, whatever floats your boat, each to their own, you enjoy your S&S GTD and I will enjoy my non-SS GTD.
